The U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retirement of Lamar Alexander appears
likely to stay in the Republican column. Although none of them are probably well
known, party line voting gives the two leading GOP contenders early advantages
over their likely Democratic opponent.

Statewide, Republican Bill Hagerty tops Democrat James Mackler 55%-33% and
fellow Republican Manny Sethi is ahead of Mackler by 46%-35%.

HOW THE POLL WAS CONDUCTED

This poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc. of Jacksonville,
Florida from January 28 through January 30, 2020. A total of 625 registered
Tennessee voters were interviewed live by telephone statewide.

Those interviewed were randomly selected from a phone-matched Tennessee

voter registration list that included both land-line and cell phone numbers.
Quotas were assigned to reflect voter registration by county.

The margin for error, according to standards customarily used by statisticians, is

no more than ± 4 percentage points. This means that there is a 95 percent
probability that the "true" figure would fall within that range if all voters were
surveyed. The margin for error is higher for any subgroup, such as a gender or
age grouping.
