ENCE 3680 Design of Reinforced Concrete

HW#1-Beam Analysis

Wight and Macgregor’s textbook (P169-171 7th ed):

1. Prob. 4-1
Hints: Normal weight concrete 𝑤 = 150 𝑙𝑏/𝑓𝑡 3

2. Prob. 4-3
You are strongly recommended to try using Maple to complete this problem because of easy
replication by using a software.

3. Prob. 4-4

Hints: tension steel is placed on the top for cantilever beam, #7 graded bar 𝑓𝑦 = 60𝑘𝑠𝑖 , cross
section of reinforcement can be referred to appendix table A-1.
Normal weight concrete 𝑤 = 150 𝑙𝑏/𝑓𝑡 3

4. Prob. 4-5
Hint: You need to determine the centroid of two layers of tension steel in order to determine
effective depth of beam section d. You may assume the depth of the Whitney stress block is less
than or equal to the thickness of the compression flange and tension steel is yielding.

5. Prob. 4-8

6. Prob. 4-11.
