Assessment of Wind Energy using Weibull and Rayleigh distribution for

Prospective sites in Sindh

Introduction
Pakistan pursued the renewable energy policy to minimize the cost of energy per kWh as well as
dependence on costly imported oil. Jhimpir site is termed as wind corridor and has tremendous
proven wind power potential. The site is hosted for the first installed wind power plant. The aim
of paper is to investigate the performance and levelized cost of energy of a wind farm.
The methodology covers assessment of wind characteristics, performance function and levelized
cost of energy model. The measured mean wind speed was found to be 8 m/s at 80 m above the
ground level. The average values of standard deviation, Weibull k and c parameters, obtained
using entire data set, were found to be 2.563, 3.360 and 8.940 m/s at 80m.

Wind Analysis of Available statistical wind data

Wind analysis is a study on statistical information of measured wind data. It mainly focuses on
identification of crucial parameters of the probability distribution function. The probability distribution
function defines the occurrence frequency for each value of wind speed, which is collected for different
years. In calculating the amount of electrical energy generation from wind energy, power output
functions of specific wind turbines with respect to wind speed are directly applied with the probability
distribution function of measured wind data around the areas. With those results, determination of
annual energy production is carried out for competence of energy resources at determined sites at
desired heights.

Estimation of wind power

Mechanical power of wind, which flows at a wind speed through a turbine blade sweeping an area, is a
cubic function of the wind speed.

where P(v) is the power density, p is the air density (1.225 kg/m3), v is the wind speed.

Wind characteristics and Weibull distribution functions

Wind is the random variable and highly fluctuating meteorological parameter that changes
with time of the day, day of the year and year to year. The probability distribution function
(pdf) can be calculated for changing nature of wind over a period of time. The wind-speed
can be measured by Weibull distribution function. Probability density function f(v) can be
expressed as (Akpinar and Akpinar, 2005)
