Technology:
1.Drilling and Production Technology
• Advances in technology play a critical role in meeting the global energy demand. They enable
the discovery of new resources, access to harsh or remote locations, and the development of
challenging reservoirs that previously were not economic to produce.
• ExxonMobil’s policy is to conduct business in a manner that is compatible with the balanced
environmental and economic needs of the communities in which it operates.
2. Hydraulic fracturing
• Hydraulic fracturing is one of several steps in the process of developing unconventional
resources. At its most basic level, a “conventional” resource will flow on its own to the
wellbore, while an “unconventional” resource will not. In this context, “unconventional” refers
to oil and gas contained in layers of hard rock.
3. Exploration technology
• Sound has been an integral part of oil and gas exploration for the last five decades. In the
process of seismic mapping, sound wave reflections are used to form three dimensional images
of geologic formations. The energy industry uses these 3-D images to help determine where to
drill, reducing the number of wells needed to produce oil and gas resources.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
• We have interests in approximately 5,400 megawatts of cogeneration capacity in more than
100 installations around the world. This capacity is equivalent to the annual energy needed to
power 4.3 million U.S. homes.
• We are also working to reduce flaring, venting and fugitive emissions in our operations. Since
2000, we eliminated or captured and stored 400 million metric tons of CO2, equivalent to the
energy-related CO2 emissions of about 55 million U.S. homes over the same period, using a
variety of technologies.
