4.0 GENERAL

4.1 MANUFACTURER'S STANDARDS

Paint Manufacturer's data sheets, application instructions, and safety precautions shall be
followed as part of this specification. All locations that perform painting shall maintain
copies of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all paint and solvents used on
Company materials and equipment.

4.2 SCOPE
This document applies to the FPSO Hull, Piping, Mooring and Riser Supports, Topsides, and
accommodation quarters. The pipe marking scheme described in this document applies to all
FPSO exposed pipe work and pipe connections.
Subsea manifolds, jumpers, and flow lines are not covered by this document. Also, pipes
containing nonhazardous fluids under low pressure and ambient temperatures are not covered
by this marking standard and do not require visible markings.
Pipes not covered by this document may require marking for other reasons. In such cases,
such markings shall conform to this document as far as practicable.

4.3 RESPONSIBILITY
It is the responsibility of the Project Team and the Project Manager to ensure that the paint
color scheme and pipe marking standard defined by this document is being followed. The
FPSO Conversion Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with this requirement by
Fabricators and Conversion Yard Personnel.

4.4 BACKGROUND
International regulations under which the offshore facility is built and operated require that a
uniform scheme be used to identify pipes and pipe systems containing hazardous fluids or
pressures. Moreover, the adoption of and adherence to a recognized industry practice for the
identification of potential hazards are important elements of the Company’s HSE strategy.
Therefore, the Company shall apply a standard marking scheme containing minor
modifications to the ASME standard suitable for the FPSO.

5.0 PAINT COLOR SCHEME

5.1 COLOR INDICATOR

With the exception of firewater lines and other fire suppression fluid lines (i.e. CO2), legend
background colors and color stripes shall indicate the hazard category as given in Table 6-1.
Pipes in fire suppression service shall be painted in red along the entire length of the pipes.
If the legend is created on an adhesive label, the label itself shall have the background color
as indicated in Table 6-1.
The category of "low inherent hazard" may additionally be provided onto the ASME
Standard.

5.2 LOCATION OF LABELS AND STRIPES

The legend labels and color indicator bands should be provided at suitable locations along the
length of each pipe branch line, so that they can be easily seen and read by Operators and
Technicians. The reference standard calls for the legend to be “close to valves or flanges and
adjacent to changes in direction, branches, and where pipes pass through walls or floors.” In
some cases, this shall result in excessive and unnecessary labeling. The standard on this
document permits practical variations from the reference standard. For example, the
placement of the legend in the middle of the visible length of pipe may be more in keeping
with the purpose of pipe marking.

5.3 PIPE LEGEND

The legend shall be marked as shown in Table 6-1 together with the indication of flow
direction. Additional details can be added to the legend at the Operators’ discretion. Such
additions may include the line size, line number, and pressure rating.
The direction of fluid flow under normal conditions shall be indicated by arrows stenciled
adjacent to the legend in the same coloring as the legend. Where normal fluid flow may be
bidirectional, such as on crossover lines, the flow direction shall be indicated with double-
headed arrows.

0003-MI20-00S1-0031, Rev. 0

The size, style, and color of the letters and symbols shall be described in more detail in the
referenced standard and should be applied without variation as far as practicable.

5.4 EXCEPTIONS
Subject to Company approval, other means of markings or identifications shall be applied
where such markings as mentioned above are not available or practicable.

5.5 CATEGORIES
The following categories define types of contained fluids that shall be identifiable to
Operators via a specified label and/or background and legend color.

5.5.1 Hazardous (Yellow)

Contained fluids in this category are hazardous when released. They have one or more of the
following characteristics:
• Explosive or highly flammable (hydrocarbon liquids or gases, methanol, etc.)
• Chemically active (chlorinated compounds, etc.)
• High toxicity (H2S, benzene, etc.)
• High energy level (high temperature and/or high pressure)

5.5.2 Low Inherent Hazard (Brown)

Contained fluids in this category are gaseous or liquid and are not hazardous in open
containers or pools. They represent a low hazard potential under pressure during release from
the pipe system. Fluids in this category include oily water, glycol, hydraulic oils, lubricating
oils, sewage, etc.

5.5.3 Nonhazardous Gas (Blue)

Contained fluids in this category are almost always nonhazardous when released. Fluids in
this category include compressed air and Nitrogen gas under 10 bar (143 psi) atmospheric,
etc.

5.5.4 Nonhazardous Liquids (Green)

Contained fluids in this category are almost always nonhazardous when released. They
include low energy seawater and fresh water. The Pipe Legend Marking Guide is shown
below in Table 6-1.

5.6 AREA AND EQUIPMENT COLOR AND CODE

The paint color scheme and code number used on the FPSO for area and equipment
identification are given in Table 5-1.

6.2 MARKING FOR NONINSULATED PIPING

Firewater lines and other fire suppression fluid lines (i.e. CO2 and FM200) shall be painted
with red (Munsell 5R 4/14 or RAL 3020) along the entire length of the pipe, or in accordance
with prevailing local regulations.
All other lines shall be painted along the entire length.

6.3 MARKING FOR INSULATED PIPING

Insulated lines shall be identified by color stripes taped to distinguish the system, as follows:
• The color is used to paint or affix a colored tape to the pipe at intervals along its length
that are convenient to see from any area in which personnel circulate or may be found
performing routine tasks.
• Maximum distance between color indicator stripes shall be 25 feet (8 meters).

• Color stripe width shall be a minimum of 40% of the outside diameter of the pipe, but
shall not to be less than 3 inches (75 mm). For the pipe diameter less than 3 inches (75
mm), the width may be equal to the outside diameter.
