Black History Month 2019

Notes, Ideas, and Questions

This is a shared document where we can begin placing notes, ideas, and questions we have regarding
BHM 2019. I am so excited for us to facilitate yet another Black History Month program in a few short
months. We did such a great job with the dance performance last year, so I just know 2019 will be all that
and much much MORE. I know both of us are extremely organized and self-motivated, and we like things
to be well planned, so this is our start.

Ideas:
● Teacher/Student FPA Black History Month 2019 T-Shirts

● Winter Break Dance $$$

● GoFundMe (or other donation sites) $$$

● Selling nachos during lunch $$$

● Girls (and boys) dance performance

● Speeches

● Singing

● Gallery Walk around the 8th grade hallway

● Unit/Lessons aligned with BHM

● African drums during dance performance

● Spoken word (2 students performing together)

● Step team performance (separate from dance) Commented [1]: I think it would be cool if the greeks
on the University of Memphis campus could help with
● Theme could be “Walking in Memphis” that highlights Memphis’ notable African this!
Commented [2]: That would be amazing!
Americans (Reasoning: The majority of our students are from Memphis and have

developed somewhat of a negative perception to their city. This could help highlight the

positive things presently and historically that African Americans have contributed to this

city.)
● Storyline Option One: There can be students who are in class and are presented the

idea of a research paper on notable African Americans in history. Students can be

“taken back in time” to view the history/highlights of Memphis. Commented [3]: I love this!

● Storyline Option Two: Students take a trip to the Civil Rights Museum. While on the tour,

students gain access to a room they are not suppose to enter and find themselves going

through history. (Mimics the idea of the movie “Our Friend Martin”) Commented [4]: These are some GREAT ideas!
Ahhh! I'm so excited

Questions:

● When would we like the BHM program to take place? (If it is after school, we can invite
our network schools)
○ Possibly the last week in February. It could be Friday after school. This way
performers are already at school with needed items. Commented [5]: I agree! That gives adequate time for
● When would we begin informationals and practices? us to promote it and "hype it up" to the students and
parents to attend. I am hoping for a good turn out
● What is our deadline for outline of the show?
Commented [6]: The first informational could be as
● Do we want input of staff and assigned roles for them? soon as October after Fall Break.
Practices could begin as soon as November.
What do you think?
Commented [7]: That would give us this full month of
September to plan it and then launch in October
Commented [8]: Hmmm...the very beginning of
January? Which could give us that whole month to
practice the finalized program and get it engrained for
the kids and ourselves how things will play out?
Commented [9]: Create the roles and provide like an
excel sheet for teachers to sign up, emphasizing how
important it is to be consistent and dedicated if you
choose to sign up. What do you think?
