Jeremiah Journey 2020

Bible Study Guide

Week #1

The Book of Jeremiah opens with a brief description of Jeremiah’s lineage and place in
biblical history. Jeremiah is described as “one of the priests… in the land of Benjamin”
in verse 1. He is also said to have received “the word of the Lord” during the days of
Josiah, king of Judah, as well as Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, both sons of Josiah and
eventual rulers. The word received by Jeremiah spans the reigns of these 3 kings of
Judah and leads up to “the captivity of Jerusalem” referenced in verse 3.

1. God opens His dialogue with Jeremiah by saying in verse 5: "Before I formed you
in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as
a prophet to the nations." How does this introduction set the tone for Jeremiah’s
calling?

2. What does verse 5 say to you about predestined pathways on our Christian
journey?

3. What is Jeremiah’s initial reaction to God’s calling? And how does that relate
your own walk with the Lord?

4. God uses 2 object lessons to confirm Jeremiah’s calling, the almond branch and
the boiling pot. How does God explain His plans through these 2 objects?

5. God shares with Jeremiah in verse 9 by touching Jeremiah’s mouth and stating
that He had put His word in Jeremiah’s mouth and in verse 17 He tells Jeremiah
to speak “everything that I command you.” Why do you think Jeremiah needed
both a physical and verbal assurance from God?

6. God warns Jeremiah that others will oppose him (verses 18-19). How does God
describe how He will be there for Jeremiah?

Consider This. . .

Jeremiah is estimated to have been 17 years old at the time of his calling. Joseph is
estimated to have been the same age when his brothers sold him into slavery in Genesis.

Youth can be overlooked and disregarded by others due to lack of experience. God
grants us spiritual gifts that may not be apparent and need to be developed in us.

Keep Paul’s pastoral advice to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12 and Titus in Titus 2:7-8.
