ASSEMBLY (USING THE ‘SCRAPPY’ METHOD)

• Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the white squares.
• Place each white square RST on top of a coloured square. Sew along the marked line. Trim excess fabric ¼” away from
the seam.

• Press the seam towards the coloured fabric. Check your finished HST measures 2.5” square. Make 100 HSTs.
• Lay out your HSTs on a flat surface following the layout diagram above. Play with the placement of your HSTs until you are
happy with the overall colour distribution and colour graduation. You don’t have to follow the colours shown in the diagram
exactly – this is an example guide only.
• Sew HSTs together one row at a time. Press rows in alternate directions (press the seams of the first row to the right,
second row to the left, and so on. This will be useful in the next step).
• Take the first two rows, and place them RST. ‘Butt’ the seams – as they were pressed in alternate directions in the previous
step they should nestle against each other nicely. Pin each seam together securely. Sew the two rows together.
• Repeat with the remaining rows until the centre of your mini quilt has been assembled.
• Sew the two short strips of white cotton to the right and left of the quilt centre. Press towards the white cotton.
• Sew the two long strips of white cotton to the top and bottom of the quilt centre. Press towards the white cotton.Your
quilt top is finished.
• Make a quilt sandwich with the backing and batting, and quilt as desired.
• Bind your mini quilt using your preferred binding method.

ALTERNATIVE ‘NO WASTE’ METHOD

• The HST method described above is useful when you are using tiny scraps of fabrics from your stash. However, one
drawback of this method is that there is quite a bit of fabric wasted from each HST. An alternative ‘no waste’ method is as
follows:
• Cut 50 white squares and 50 coloured fabrics 2 7/8” square.
• Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the white squares.
• Stitch a line ¼ “ away from the drawn line on both sides.
• Cut along the drawn line. You will end up with two HSTs. Press each HST towards the coloured fabric and trim off the dog
ears. Check that your HSTs measure 2.5” exactly (trim as required). (TIP: Instead of 2 7/8” squares you can use 3” squares
of white and coloured fabrics and trim the finished HSTs down to 2.5” if you would like to be extra precise)
• Follow the remaining instructions for the ‘scrappy’ method to assemble and finish your mini quilt.
