The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It covers 40% of the
South American continent and can be found within Peru, Ecuador,
Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname as well as in French
Guiana.

The Amazon rainforest is home to a very diverse range of species, many of which
are not found elsewhere in the world. Some of these animals are the Golden Lion
Tamarin, Capybara, Giant Anteater, Green Iguana, Harpy Eagle, Anaconda, Glass
Frog, Jesus Lizard, Kinkajou, Sloth, Poison Dart Frog, Amazon River Dolphin or
Boto, Macaws and Jaguars.

Farmers use forest fires, often illegally, to clear land for cattle ranching and
growing soybeans, as well as paving the way for future development.
Direct causes of deforestation are agricultural expansion, wood extraction, and
infrastructure expansion such as road building and urbanization.

Deforestation affects wild animals, plants and humans in at least four distinct
ways: it can affect humans by soil erosion, which can lead to clogged waterways
and other problems, by water cycle disruption, which can lead to desertification
and habitat loss, by greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global climate
change.

The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change, desertification,
soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people.

One of the consequences of deforestation is a loss of

biodiversity. Deforestation also increases greenhouse gas emissions, disrupts the
water cycle, increases soil erosion and decreases the natural beauty of an area.

The Amazon Rainforest should be cared for. It is the home and shelter of many
inhabitants. Without the Amazon Rainforest, they might not still be able to live
today.

As well as the vivid beauty that comes with great diversity in plants and animals,
rainforests also play a practical role in keeping our planet healthy. By absorbing
carbon dioxide and releasing the oxygen that we depend on for our survival.

The absorption of this CO2 also helps to stabilize the Earth's climate. This is
important because climate change is a big issue nowadays. Climate change affects
animals, as well as humans.

Rainforests also help to maintain the world's water cycle by adding water to the
atmosphere through the process of transpiration which creates clouds. Water
generated in rainforests travel around the world; scientists think that moisture
generated in the forests of Africa ends up falling as rain in the America’s.
