Computer Science for All Professional Development - ASSURE Lesson Plan

Analyze learners Who are you teaching? Describe student demographics, strengths, weaknesses, and challenges.

Participants in this class are 20 teachers. The class is limited to twenty to ensure personal attention, adequate
understanding and the follow-up. The teachers should have basic knowledge based on common understanding and
observation of computer science instruction and their demographics and abilities of their students. They should be
in position to explain their class characteristics.

Learning Styles
This lesson will use methods that appeal to verbal, individual work, as well as small and large group discussion.

 If teachers are new to teaching computer science (CS) or have experience teaching other CS courses, the Code.org
Professional Learning Program offers year-round support. They’ve designed this program to promote growth by
providing space for teachers to become comfortable with curricular materials, CS content, and pedagogy.
 The Microsoft Educator Community provides a personalized hub where teachers can find training and lessons, earn
badges and certificates, and connect and collaborate with fellow educators.

The presenter will begin the lesson with a brief introduction and overview explaining computer science with the help of a
diagram. The teachers will then form discussions groups and samples of lessons will be distributed. This will help them in
comparing the different curricula.

Media and Materials
Computers, Smartboard and the whiteboards in this lesson will be used for interpretation. Charts and the models will also be
used for demonstrations. The presenter should have fully covered and researched the topics before introducing it to the
teachers. He/she should be aware of all lesson topics and should be able to answer any question posed by the teachers
related to the topics. The presenter should ensure that the charts and the models are ready before the beginning of the
lesson. Enough worksheets/books among other teaching and learning resources should be available and ready to distribute
to the teachers. The presenter should check that the classroom for adequate comfort and to ensure that it is proper for
teaching and learning process. This includes adequate lighting, proper ventilations, good sitting arrangements and the
classroom should be clean.

There will be icebreaker and overview of the myths of computer science and teaching technical subjects. The AP Exam books
will be distributed by the presenter that will allow teachers to follow along with the teaching. After introductions, icebreaker,
and overview of the myths of computer science and teaching technical subjects, the presenter will take the teachers through
systematic step for understanding. The class will then participate in manageable discussion groups (7-12 members) meant to
allow the teachers/learners to discuss amongst themselves and ask questions related to the topics.

Evaluate and revise Describe how/when you will assess the learning.

The lesson will close with a summary from the presenter. Question and answer method will be used for evaluation and
revision. The questions will include:
1. Who can learn computer science?
2. Who can teach computer science?
3. What skills can students gain from learning computer science?
