Reduction of the Killings of Nature Have you ever thought about the disasters that could easily have your life be taken? If not, I should tell you that nature can kill. It is really not possible to stop nature from giving off disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. But as humans, it is our responsibility to protect our lives in such situations. Though we cannot stop these, we can have the destructions it causes be lessened with the right planning and mitigation. These disasters are known to bring forth massive death and destructions. Yes, it is true as this occurrences are unstoppable therefore the results they give after the natural phenomena are uncontrollable. As what happened on the eruption of Mt. Etna on Africa where almost 17,000 people died and 20,000 were left homeless. From the investigations and reports these people were informed very late about the awakening of the said volcano which caused the evacuation delay. If only the people were aware of it, with proper information that prioritizes the people’s safety they could’ve been saved. The destructions could’ve been reduced if only the disseminations of warning were done according to a plan. If the people practiced drills and if they had known evacuation areas as safe zones, they might still be alive. Now think that these people counts on you when it comes to this things. Imagine that those people are your responsibility as an official, wouldn’t you take an action? Think that if they die, your conscience might kill you for you know you should’ve done something. The big question is how about if you, the person who’s responsible for things as such would also die, who will you blame? If you remember, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Surigao last February, 2017 and by the devastation it caused, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) had everyone warned to learn from the resulted situation of the event for a more powerful one. An earthquake said to be ranging from magnitude 7-8 coming from the most and only feared fault in the cracks of Luzon, Philippines which is the West Valley Fault where it transverses from the major parts in Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan, Laguna and Cavite which they named the Big One. Visualize if the Big One happened the next sunrise. Think of the disasters we could experience from it. As what Arch. Felino A. Palafox, one of the country’s disaster mitigator in architecture said “We live in cities plagued by the ills of poor urban planning and construction design practices, and we work in a country that is susceptible to natural and man-made disasters.”, it is unlikely that we could be safe in spite of this. But that is why the word “mitigation” together with “risk reduction” is present. Because we can do something to survive from the expected phenomena. According to the “Study for Earthquake Impact Reduction for Metropolitan Manila in the Republic of the Philippines” which was conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) back in 2004 predicted that around 170,000 residential houses would be heavily damaged or might collapse, and 26 percent of the buildings would be moderately damaged. From their study, the first hour of the Big One could reach a death toll 34,000 people and another 20,000 could become casualties in the succeeding hours from the damages of the infrastructures that may cause injuries to people. On the event, rescue operations might be limited. With the enormous devastations, rescuers may have delays upon operation therefore proper orientation on evacuation areas is needed for people’s independence on such days. Strategic planning could be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation. Therefore we need to conduct such mappings, practices, and meetings for our people. In preparation for the Big One it is very important that there should be ordinance for infrastructures telling that each and every building in our place should have an evacuation map for the people together with fire alarms for people’s awareness. Concrete buildings can be truly devastated with a 7-8 magnitude and may cause injuries and deaths in which we as officials are responsible with. It is our sworn responsibility to protect our people on such cases that we should do. Necessarily, we should conduct meetings for everyone which would raise awareness on such disasters. People can never decide on situations as this when they do not know a thing concerning earthquakes and its aftershocks, what to do after, before and during an earthquake, where to report and the facilities concerning health related problems. We should also have drills be practiced for this situation. In shorter term, we need a disaster awareness campaign be raised on our locality. For our very people to have knowledge on this devastating phenomena we expect and also for them to protect their families. It is their right to gain safety with their lives when we know they can, through us. We are the officials of this local therefore we should work as one. Officiating our people working and prioritizing with them and for them. Our people should be our priority for they chose us to be responsible for their safety. A disaster awareness campaign can change people’s lives and can save lives during the Big One. Such campaign for our people’s as our responsibility. Saint auguStine’S School Rizal,Tagudin,Ilocos Sur

The Earth Shakes the Ground Breaks Cracks, faults, trenches, and destructions all because of the shakings. Death and devastations as situations which earthquakes commonly that cause fear to the people. Because a single shaking could change the lives of many, which will just obviously be worse. It’s either an injury for them, death, or losing what they earned to comfortably live on this planet. People nowadays fear the natural occurences but tend to do nothing. Fear isn’t enough. Step on it and take action. On the 11th of March 2011, an earthquake occurred in Japan. This happened to trigger a massive tsunami along the Pacific Coast of northeastern Japan. This disaster resulted to the death of twenty thousand (20,000) people. Damages of infrastructures also resulted from the said event. What if this happens in our country? We all know about the Big One now for sure. From the disseminations of information from the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) back when an earthquake struck the lands of Surigao with magnitude 6.7. The Big One is predicted to occur with magnitude 7.2 from the occurrence of past earthquakes. “It might be impossible to predict when the next earthquake may occur but scientists can pin down what is called a recurrence interval or the average time span between earthquake occurrences.” said Kristine Angeli Sabelino the reporter of Asias News Network. From her report it is said that in a collaboration study with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Phivolcs visualized at 18 earthquake scenarios. The three organizations selected three scenarios for detailed damage analysis: a 7.2-magnitude earthquake from the West Valley Fault, an offshore 7.9-magnitude earthquake from the Manila Trench and a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hitting Manila Bay. That of the West Valley Fault, a 100-kilometer fault that runs through six cities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, is considered the worst-case scenario. This is “The Big One." The main reason why we should prepare and raise awareness for our people. To save lives from such phenomena. There should be programs for these situations for the knowledge of our people on what to do, before, during, and after the event. They wouldn’t function well for themselves and their families if they know nothing about the situation. Drills should be conducted regularly in public. Meetings must be conducted which will strike on the preparedness, information, and knowledge of the people about the earthquakes. We should have a disaster awareness program to help save the lives of our people. They count on us as officials we must do what must be done. To prioritize their safety on such situations. When the earth shakes the ground breaks, preparedness is what we need. If not, devastations the event may cause may result to a massive one. Truly we cannot stop this occurrence but remember we can do things to reduce the destructions and the negative resulting situations from the earthquake. Buildings may be damaged but what’s important is lives be saved. That our people can survive. That this wouldn’t end an individual’s life just because of the lack of knowledge from this situation. It is our sworn responsibility to have our people on the best and the safest situations on times of those events. Therefore we should not just wait but function not just for us but for our men who chose us to govern and officiate them. They put their trust on us and breaking it isn’t right. It is our ultimate goal to lessen death and injuries in such events therefore cooperation with them is a need. Interaction on how they will act on those situations should be guided while time is ticking until it stops on the earthquake. We must have a disaster campaign to lessen the earthquake’s resulting pain.
