acquainted to our lesson objective.
At the end of the lesson, students must be able
to:
a. use verbs when giving information and making
explanations.
D. Discussion

When we say verb, what does it mean?

Verb is a word that expresses an action or state of
being.
An action of a subject in relation to an object and is
expressed in two ways.

What are those?

Active and Passive Voice
Exactly!

These two ways of expressing action of a subject

are known as voices.

Let us take these examples and analyze whether it is

active or passive voice. 1. I write a letter. (Active)
A letter is written by me. (Passive)
2. Ana eat an apple. (Active)
An apple is eaten by Ana. (Passive)
3. He bought a car. (Active)
A car was bought by him. (Passive)
4. Marilyn mailed the letter. (Active)
The letter was mailed by Marilyn. (Passive)
5. I know him. (Active)
He is known to me. (Passive)
The structure of same sentence changes when
expressed as active voice or passive but the
meaning of a sentence remains the same. We know
that every sentence have a subject, a verb and an
object.

What is a subject? A Subject is an agent who works on an object in a

sentence.
Let us first analyze the differences of active and
passive voice. Active voice, the subject acts upon the object while
passive voice, the object is acted upon by the subject.
The sequence of the subject and the object of the
sentence are reversed.

STRUCTURE OF SAME SENTENCES

Active Voice
Subject + Verb + Object

Ex. Marilyn mailed the letter.

Passive Voice
Object + Verb + Subject
Ex. The letter was mailed by Marilyn
There are basic rules for changing active and
passive voice.
Rule #1. The places of the subject and the object will
interchange. The subject will shift to the place of
object and the object will take the place of subject in
passive voice.
Rule #2. Only past participle form or 3rd form of verb
(e.g. eaten) will always be used as main verb in
passive voices for all tenses. No other form of verb
will be used as main verb.
Rule #3. The word “by” will be used before the subject
in the passive voice.
Rule #4. No other word such as “with or to” may also
be used instead of word by depending upon the subject
of the sentence. These words are used in few causes:
The word by is used in the most causes.
Ex. Water fills a tub.(Active)
A tub is filled with water.(Passive)
Rule #5. The Auxiliary verb will be changed in passive
voice depending upon the tense of sentence in the
F. Application active voice.

Since you don’t have questions anymore, we will

have another activity. Just stay with your groups.
All you have to do is to perform the tasks using
verbs. Remember that your performance will be
