COURT OF APPEAL INAUGURATES DIVISION IN


ASABA, DELTA STATE
On Monday, February 3rd, the President of the Court
of Appeal, Hon. Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa,
inaugurated the 17th Court of Appeal division in
Asaba.

Justice Bulkachuwa stated that establishing the court


in Asaba is in line with efforts of the Judiciary in
ensuring access to justice and quick dispensation of
cases as well as efficient administration of justice.

In his address, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, stated that


the inauguration of the Court complex demonstrates
his commitment to the rule of law and social justice
and that his administration is delighted to have the
court which signifies a federal presence in Delta
State.

“Aside the Court of Appeal providing speedy access


to justice in a cost-effective manner, the presence of
such a federal institution enhances the profile of
Delta state, creates jobs for our people and impacts
positively on the retail economy,” Governor Okowa
said.

DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT APPROVES HARMONZED


RIGHTS FOR PENSIONERS
On Tuesday, February 4th, the Delta State
Government approved harmonized rights of
pensioners. The Commissioner for
I n f o r m a t i o n , M r. C h a r l e s A n i a g w u ,
disclosed this at the end of the State
Executive Meeting in Asaba.

With this new development, the State


Government will use the N18,000 minimum
wage to calculate the pension entitlement
of retirees in the state from 2011 — instead
of the N7,500 minimum wage that was
initially used to calculate their entitlements.

The EXCO also approved more than N800


million as compensation for the 1,000
hectare land that will host the Kwale
Industrial Park Project.

PROGRAM FOR YOUTH IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
On Tuesday, February 4th, the Delta
State Government approved a Rural
Youth Skill Acquisition program. T

his program is targeted at the


illiterate and semi-literate youth in
the rural communities of Delta State,
and is aimed at providing them with
necessary skills for gainful
opportunities.

OKOWA ADVOCATES FOR MANDATORY PARTICIPATION IN


SKILL ACQUISITION PROGRAMS FOR NYSC CORPERS
On Wednesday, February 5th, Governor Okowa
advocated for the inclusion of entrepreneurship
programmes in National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC) scheme in order to make graduates more
self-reliant.

Governor Okowa stated this when the Director-


General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim
visited him at the Government House in Asaba.

“Corps members need to acquire many new skills.


This is very important — so that they can depend
more on their skills rather than waiting for the few
white collar jobs,” Governor Okowa said.

“My administration has started to make it


compulsory that our tertiary institutions introduce
skill acquisition and entrepreneurship
programmes which will help prepare our children
for the future” Governor Okowa said.

DELTA STATE SIGNS MOU WITH USAID ON PROVISION OF


WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE SERVICES
On Wednesday, February 5th, the Delta State
Government signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with the United States
Agency for International Development
(USAID) for the implementation of Effective
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services (E-
WASH) in the state.

During the signing ceremony, Governor


Okowa stated that his administration would
implement the regulatory framework for the
public water supply that is needed for the
project to be effective.

“Safe water is very important. I am glad that


USAID is working with the Ministry of Water
Resources as this will improve the health of
our people,” Governor Okowa said.

OKOWA INAUGURATES NEW 720-CAPACITY HOSTEL FOR


NYSC CORPERS
On Thursday, February 6th, Governor Ifeanyi
Okowa assured authorities of National Youth
Service Corps (NYSC) of the Delta State
Government’s continued support to the
scheme.

Governor Okowa gave the assurance while


inaugurating a 720-capacity hostel for NYSC
members at their Orientation Camp in Issele-
Uku.

"As a government, I believe it is important we


improve on the facilities in this orientation
camp as this is the first point of call for NYSC
members posted to Delta. We therefore
should make them comfortable so they can
serve the nation in a conducive
environment,” Okowa said.

OKOWA CALLS FOR TOUGHER MEASURES TO COMBAT


FOOD, DRUG ADULTERATION
On Friday, February 9th, Governor Ifeanyi
Okowa urged the National Agency for Food
and Drug Administration and Control
(NAFDAC) to apply tougher measures to
tackle the adulteration of food and
pharmaceuticals in the country.

Governor Okowa, who was represented by


his deputy, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, disclosed
this when the Director-General of NAFDAC,
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, came on a courtesy
visit to the Government House in Asaba.

“Establishing an investigative centre in


Asaba will help to curb the prevalence of
fake goods and medications. This
administration acknowledges the vital
importance of NAFDAC and will deepen its
collaboration with the agency,” Otuaro said.
