The Two Systems of Measurement

Measurement has been important ever since man settled from his nomadic lifestyle and started using building materials; occupying land and trading
with his neighbors. As society has become more technologically orientated much higher accuracies of measurement are required in an increasingly
diverse set of fields, from micro-electronics to interplanetary ranging.
Most countries use the Metric System, which uses the measuring units such as meters and grams and adds prefixes like kilo, milli and centi to count
orders of magnitude. In the United States, they use the older Imperial system, where things are measured in feet, inches and pounds.

D. Discussing the sub-topic #1 10 minutes

E. Discussing the sub-topic #2 Collaborative Approach:
Group Work

Class will be divided into two. Each group will convert all five measurements.

Direction: Convert the following. Round your answers into two decimal places.
1. 25 cm to = __________ inches Answers: 1. 9.84 inches
2. 63 m to = __________ feet 2. 206.69 or 206.70 feet
3. 50 ft to = ___________meters 3. 15.24 meters
4. 13 inches = ___________ meters 4. 4. 0.33 meters
5. 10 mm to = __________ inch 5. 5. 0.39 inch
The following formulas are given;
 Metric Conversion Table
1 millimeter = 0.03937 inches (in.)
1 centimeter = .3937 inches (in.)
1 meter = 39.37 inches (in.)
 English Conversion Table
1 inch (in.) = .0254 mm. = 2.54 cm. = .0254 (m.)
1 foot (ft.) = 304.8 mm. = 30.48 cm = .3048 (m.)
1 yard (yd.) = 914.4 mm = 91.4 cm = .9144 (m.)

F. Developing mastery 4 minutes

Constructivist Approach
Representatives from each group will explain their answer in front of the class through board work.

G. Making generalizations and 8 minutes

abstractions about the lesson Integrative Approach
Discussion Method

TWO SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT

 Metric System
This system is based on the decimal system. The meter is the basic unit of measurement and there are multiples or fractional parts of the meter,
such as the millimeter, are designated as such by prefixes to the word meter.
 English System
This system consists, basically, of the inch, foot, yard, and mile. The foot is the basic unit of measure. The inch is a subdivision of the foot, while
the yard and the mile are multiples of the foot.
 The Inch
The inch is divided into 16 graduations and the smallest graduation is read 1/16.
Conversion of Units
 Metric to Metric
10 millimeters (mm.) = 1 centimeter (cm.)
10 centimeters (cm.) = 1 decimeter (dm.)
10 decimeter (dm.) = 1 meter (m.)
10 meters (m.) = 1 decameter (Dm.)
10 decameter (Dm.) = 1 hectometer (Hm.)
10 hectometer (Hm.) = 1 kilometer (Km.)
10 kilometer (Km.) = 1 mayriameter (Mn.)

 English to English Conversion

12 inches (in.) = 1 foot (ft.)
3 feet (ft.) = 1 yard (yd.)
 Metric to English, English to Metric
1 inch (in.) = .0254 mm. = 2.54 cm. = .0254 (m.)
1 foot (ft.) = 304.8 mm. = 30.48 cm = .3048 (m.)
1 yard (yd.) = 914.4 mm = 91.4 cm = .9144 (m.)

Reflective Approach
H. Finding practical
Relate the activities given to real life situations. Help students differentiate the uses of converting of units when it comes to daily living applications. Ask
applications of concepts and
students through recitation.
skills in daily living
I. Evaluating learning Formative Assessment (5 points)
Assessment Direction: In a ¼ sheet of paper, convert the following measurements.

1. 60 cm = __________ in. Answers: 1. 1. 23.52 or 24 inches

2. 3 ½ in. = __________ cm. 2. 2. 8.89 cm
3. 75 cm. = __________ m. 3. 3. .75 m.
4. 10 in. = __________ cm. 4. 4. 25.4 cm.
5. 30 cm = __________ ft. 5. 5. 0.98 or 1 ft
J. Additional activities for Assignment:
application of mediation Make a list of things at home that are measured through English system and Metric System.
