PART 1

SITE PROFILING, INVENTORY AND SELECTION PROCESS

Introduction

Taguig City had been a battlefield form Spanish era up until the Japanese colonization.

There are monuments or memorial statues that commemorate heroes or historic event that

took place at that same site where they erected. In this research, the researchers chose to

study the history of three monuments that serve as a symbol and reminder of martyrdom of

the Taguigeños during those wars. The selectd sites are the Plaza Bonifacio, Plaza QUezon

and Bantayog ng mga Bayani ng Ikalawang Digmaan Pandaigdig.

Plaza Bonifacio, Tipas

Plaza Bonifacio is a statue of Andres Bonifacio, the father of the Katipunan, stands

in memory of the time he spent here. This plaza can be found across the famous Dambanang

Kawayan Church in Barangay Ligid-Tipas and its 11 kilometers away from Taguig City

University.

It was built as a tribute to Gat Andres Bonifacio who founded the Katipunan. His father,

Santiago Bonifacio, is also a Tipas-Taguig Native. Andres Bonifacio and his father can always

be found here recruiting new members of the KKK. National Heroes day commemoration

events are held here every November 30.

Plaza Quezon, Sta. Ana

Plaza Quezon is the only monument built in honor of president Manuel L. Quezon

while he was still alive. Plaza Quezon is located in Barangay Sta. Ana besides the

Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Anne and 8 kilometers away from Taguig City University.

This is the only one erected to honor President Manuel L. Quezon when he was still

in the service as President of the Republic. This was presented to the former president himself

during his visit in Taguig. This plaza serves as venue for “Buwan ng Wika” celebratory events.

Located in front of Taguig City Hall in Barangay Tuktukan, Taguig City and it is 10

kilometers away from Taguig City University. Many of the sons of Taguig played of key roles

and many gave their lives in the battlefield of Bataan and Corregidor as regular members of

the armed forces and in our towns and barrios and jungles as fighting guerillas. Bantayog ng

mga Bayani stands as a fitting tribute to the heroes of Taguig City who died and lived in

defense of freedom during Second World War.

The first-class municipality of Taguig is situated along the northwestern shore of Laguna

de Bay at the upper mouth of the legendary Pasig River, also known as the Napindan Channel

through which Laguna drains its floodwaters. It is bounded to the north by Pateros and Pasig;

on the east by the town of Taytay and Laguna Lake; on the south by Laguna Lake and the

town of Muntinlupa; and on the west by Paranaque, Makati, and Pasay City. It has a total land

area of 4,538.2 hectares (45,382 square kilometers).

The terrain is generally, level with some parts rolling or hilly. Taguig is traversed by two

major rivers that feed the Laguna Lake, namely: the Taguig River and the Napindan Channel.

Five minor rivers also flow through it: the Bagumbayan River, the

Mauling Creek/Tabacuhan Creek, the Hagonoy River, the Tipas River/ Labasan River, and

the Sta. Ana River.

To get there, buses, jeepneys, taxis, and tricycles bound for Taguig are available in

many parts of Metro Manila.

The following are the other heritage sites of Taguig City:

Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Anne (Barangay Sta. Ana), this church was built by the

Augustinians during the 16th century and is considered one of the oldest in the country. It

houses the holy image of St. Anne, Taguig's patron saint.

Dambanang Kawayan - St. John the Baptist Church (Barangay Ligid-Tipas), the

church is made mostly of bamboo. During the Japanese occupation, it served as a torture site

for some 400 men who were later brought to Fort Santiago and were allegedly killed.

Muslim Mosque (Maharlika Village), this mosque is a place of worship for the

Muslim residents of Maharlika Village but it is also open to the public.

Parola (Napindan River), this 18th-century lighthouse is believed, to have served as

the Katipunan's center Barangay Napindan for coordination and communication.

Simborio (Taguig Cemetery Barangay Tuktukan), this simborio

or catacomb was built by the Augustinians during the 16th century.

Methodology

Research methodology is the process of how a research is being conducted. It

encompasses the tools and techniques for gathering and collecting data to conduct a

research. In this study, the researchers used qualitative research method. Qualitative data

sources include observation and participation observation, interviews and questionnaires,

documents and texts, and the researcher’s impressions and reactions.

For this study, evaluation form was used for the selected sites to determine their

potential and readiness for tourism. This research adopted the method of library research that

includes internet search to gather information, and the field research that composes

observation and interview. These methods enable the researchers to find out their awareness

and what they have known of the importance on the monument. The researchers then

analyzed and discussed and the results are displayed.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. A SWOT

Analysis is a strategic planning tool that helps to identify strengths, weaknesses, as well as

the opportunities and threats that are existing.

Bantayog ng mga Bayani has the strength of existing heritage site since it was built

twenty-six years ago and the safety and security around the monument is great. There are

many police, security guards and also service dogs on the city hall. However the monument

has weaknesses on historical presence and monumental heritage. It is lack of awareness by

the locals on the place and has no good maintenance of the monument. And its only threat is

the neglected value of the monument. But the main opportunity of the monument is to develop

the monument into a well-known and enhanced monument. The table below shows the

strategic plan on the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) of Bantayog
