SCORE:
GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1
_______
EXPERIMENT NO. 3
PASSED/FAILED
TITLE: PRESSURE - VOLUME - TEMPERATURE RELATIONS

EXPLORATION TASKS:

1. Understand the relationships among pressure, temperature, and volume.

MATERIALS:
Burner 250 - ml flask with stopper Barometer
Wire gauze 500 or 1,0000 ml beaker Water
Glass tubing 10 ml graduated cylinder Water trough
Tongs Iron ring and stand Test tube clamp
Thermometer

PROCEDURE:
1. Get a clean, dry 250 ml flask with a one-hole rubber stopper.
2. Insert a long glass tubing into the stopper tightly, and mark its position with a pen to note the level of the lip of
the lower end of the stopper.
3. Insert the flask into the 500 ml beaker, and clamp it in position.
4. Now fill beaker with water, and boil the water for 10 minutes.
5. Get the temperature of the boiling water (T1) and look for the atmospheric pressure (P1) in the barometer.
7. After 10 minutes, turn off the burner, plug the open end of the glass tubing with your thumb, remove the flask
from the clamp, and immerse it upside down into the trough filled with ice water.
8. Remove your thumb from the glass tubing only when the flask has been submerged in water. Hold the flask
submerged for 10 minutes.
9. Raise the flask to adjust the level of the water inside the flask and in the water trough.
10. Plug the glass tube again with your thumb, lift the flask from the beaker, and set it upright on the table.
11. Get the temperature of the water trough (T2).
12. Now wipe off the water outside the flask, remove the stopper, and measure the contents of the flask in the
graduated cylinder.
13. The volume of water represents the shrinkage upon cooling from T1 to T2.
14. Now fill the flask with water, and fit the stopper at its initial position.
15. Measure the volume of water that the flask can actually hold.
16. This volume represents the volume of air (V1) at T1 and P1.. The pressure (P2) of the air is barometric reading
minus the vapor pressure at T2.
