Chapter I
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

In this generation, having a business is one of the ways in learning/having

an income. Having a business can be of help to someone in earning for his/herself,

and for them spending on themselves. Putting up your own business at an early

age is a possible thing and can be an asset to the child. Teenagers nowadays are

coming to the thought of having a business in this point in time. Business according

to Wikipedia (2019) is the activity of making, buying, or selling goods or providing

services in exchange for money. While a teenager is a young person between 13

and 19 years old (Cambridge Dictionary, 2019). Basically, teenage business is

building one’s business at such a young age. There searchers will be seeking

through the reasons, risks, benefits, etc. of having a business in such an early age.

In this study, the researchers are aiming to give knowledge about its advantages

and disadvantages.

As the researchers, we came up with this thought because we want to know

both sides of having a business as a teenager. At a young age, thinking about

building your own businesses is already something, especially if you put it into

actions. Why one should consider this thought? K-12 has been implemented and

is now running in the Philippines since 2016, and until now, there is no assurance

for the grade 12 graduates to be accepted easily in any company. A survey in the

Philippine Business Education says that 4 out 5 companies will not accept these

graduates. Undersecretary Tonisito Umali said that the on-the-job training or

immersion is not the main focus of the K-12 curriculum. Another survey conducted

by the employment site Job Street, shows a minimal percentage of only 24% of

companies are ready to hire senior high graduates as of 2018, and the rest are still

onto college graduates. “It will instead worsen the problem with having a pool of

laborers with no jobs or opportunities available to hire them,” said ACT Teachers

Representatives Antonio Tinio and France Castro. These are only some negative

points about the promised job for the senior high students by the said curriculum,

that is why some graduates are considering business as an opportunity. There are

many other reasons, which will make you think, “Oh, that is right, why don’t I try

it?” or “That is a good idea, why haven’t I thought about it?” which will be discussed

further in the study.

The purpose of this study is for the other teenagers out there to get

encouraged and at the same time be aware of the risks in making their own

business in producing their own money. The researchers want to open eyes and

take notice that employment is not the only way of earning, and that working does

not have to be forcing and hard. For the researchers, it is important that one is

already open in considering starting their businesses where they can surely put up

their skills and show their abilities. The researchers also want to find out if this early

in a teenager’s life, he/she can already be a successful entrepreneur.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Teenagers, specifically those who are in grade 12 have no assurance about

being employed right after graduating. Graduates include those in college who will

surely apply too. That is why it will be hard for them and they will just end up

together with others unemployed. So this study aims to answer the questions:

Respondent’s demographic profile:

Name: Gender: ( ) male ( ) female

Year & Section: Age:

General Problem:

What are the pros and cons of putting up a business at teen age?

Sub Problems:

1. How can they start a business with a small amount capital?

2. How does having a business develop a teen's personality and abilities?

3.How will they be able to manage handling their business and other personal

activities?

4. How can they start a business with lack of experience and expertise?

5. What struggles can/will they face during the process of putting their business?

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

RESEARCH LOCALE

The study will be conducted at the University of the East – Caloocan,

located at 105 Samson Road, Caloocan City. Specifically, the respondents

included here will only be from the class of ABM 11-12 in LCT room 704, and 10

selected students will only be needed to participate in answering the

questionnaires. Particularly, 5 males and 5 females will be the respondents. The

respondents are from the school only, to have specified participants, and from the

same strand as the researchers which is ABM, to somehow incline their field to the

said respondents. The researchers will be the one to go to the respondents’ class

for their convenience, and for the researchers to make sure that they answer the

questionnaires on the given time, and also for them to collect the questionnaires

easily and at once. The study will be conducted during the first semester of school

year 2019-2020.

TYPE OF DATA/SOURCES OF DATA

This study was conducted at the class of ABM 11-12 where the researcher

conducted a survey questionnaire to answer some questions related to our study.

We conduct a survey for our topic entitled “Pros and Cons of having a business at

a young age”. There are a number of different survey techniques that can be used

to collect. The type of data is primary sources because this study refers to

information obtained firsthand by the researcher on the variables of interest for the
specific purpose of the study. The internet could also serve as a primary source

when questionnaires are administered over it.

RESEARCH DESIGN

In conducting this study, the researchers would use qualitative research

design. The kind of qualitative research design is historical approach because

systematic collection and objective evaluation of data related to past occurrences

in order to test hypotheses concerning causes, effects or trends of these events

that may help to explain present and future events. According to Jeff Sauro (2015)

A popular and helpful categorization separate qualitative methods into five groups:

ethnography, narrative, phenomenological, grounded theory, and case study. John

Creswell outlines these five methods in Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design.

Qualitative research methods are designed in a manner that they help reveal the

behavior and perception of a target audience with reference to a particular topic

(Adi Bhat, 2019).

POPULATION AND SAMPLES/SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

The population for this study included grade 11 ABM students 10 students

as a participants. We use it to gather information about their opinion on having a

business at a young age. A Convenience sampling method was used for selecting

participants in this study. Convenience sampling is a non-probability sampling

technique where subjects are selected because of their convenient accessibility

and proximity to the researcher. The subjects are selected just because they are
easiest to recruit for the study and the researcher did not consider selecting

subjects that are representative of the entire population.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

We, the researchers used survey questionnaire for instrument to collect data

from the participants. A survey questionnaire is a set of questions used in a survey.

The survey questionnaire is a type of data gathering method that is utilized to

collect, analyze and interpret the different views of a group of people from a

particular population. The survey questionnaire consists of set of questions made

by the researchers to obtain data from the respondents of selected students of

ABM 11-12.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

In September 2019, after approving the questionnaire, we, the researchers

proceed to room 704, LCT building to conduct a survey. Our respondents here will

only be the class from ABM 11-12 and 10 students will be selected to answer some

question from the questionnaire. Particularly, 5 boys and 5 girls will be the

participants or the respondents. As far as data collection tools were concerned,

the conduction of the research involved the use of open-ended question on the

survey questionnaire intended for our research entitled “Pros and Cons of having

a Business at Young Age”.
