AUGER BORING

• Auger boring can be defined as a method of boring

beneath the earth’s surface by means of auger. It
works by simultaneously jacking the casing pipe while
the rotating augers remove the excavated soil.
• In trenchless technology, auger boring is widely used
for installing pipes under railway lines, highways and
levies, where settlement is an issue.
• Augers are used in cohesive and other soft soils above water table. They may either be operated
manually or mechanically. Hand augers are used up to a depth of 6 m. Mechanically operated
augers are used for greater depths and they can also be used in gravelly soils. Augers are of two
types: (a) spiral auger and (b) post-hole auger.

Samples recovered from the soil brought up by the augers are badly disturbed. Auger boring is fairly
satisfactory by explorations at shallow depths
• Torque:

• Torque rotates the augers that turn the cutting head

• Create by a power source: (Pneumatic, hydraulic or combustion engine with a gear box)

• Thrust :

• pushes pipe into the borehole

• Torque and thrust should be closely monitored

Auger Boring

• Types of pipes installed

• Steel , reinforced concrete, GRP, vitrified clay

• Pipe require high compressive strength to prevent joint leakage.

• Also require special joint so do not get joint spalling due to stress concentrations

• Common pipe diameters 250 to 1500mm diameter

• Typical bore span 60 to 75m

• Max length ~100m

• Pipe lengths 3 to 6m (10 to 20ft)

• Road/highway crossings

• Railway crossings

• No ground surface settlement?

• Cleaning out open-ended rammed pipe

• No persons has to enter the launching pit

• Simpler and less complicated design

• Common for large Gas Distribution lines

• Short drive lengths <100m

• Groundwater dewatering may be required

• Grade and alignment control

• Augers rotation inside the casing can wear interior pipe coatings

• A larger entrance pit than pipe rammin

• Requires large area

• Need for cranes or equipment to suspend power source

• Poor bore alignment

• Generally not suitable for use with a steering head

Efficient Trenchless Technology

• Phrases like ‘well-established method’ and ‘cost-effective, efficient application’ are often used
to describe Auger Boring, widely used for the installation of steel pipes and casings. Often called
the ‘Jack and Bore Method’, this economical pipe installation method can be used in a variety of
ground and environmental conditions, yielding many benefits from reducing traffic disruptions
and roadway pavement damage to reducing noise and pollution concerns.

• Simply put, Auger Boring is the process of forming a horizontal bore by jacking the steel casing
through the earth from a main shaft to a reception shaft. Spoil is removed from inside the
encasement by means of a rotating auger. These rotating augers carry the spoil back to through
the casing pipe to the main shaft for removal. An Auger Boring Machine (ABM) bores through
soil or rock with a cutting head attached to the ‘lead’ auger to install steel casing pipe,
depending on the project.

• While this is an established and cost-effective method, one of the limitations with auger boring
has been accuracy constraints. However, new technology has made a major impact on auger
boring, which provides more precise bores to expand its abilities. Our skilled operators are also
trained and adhere to responsible and accurate procedures at all times.

• There are two types of auger boring

• Guided auger boring

• Unguided auger borinGuided Auger Boring is a Trenchless method of installing Clay or

Concrete Jacking pipes with a high degree of accuracy. The process is primarily used for
the construction of gravity sewers where traditional methods would either not be feasible due
to surface obstructions or that the depth of installation required increased cost above that of
Augerboring. With our current fleet we can install gravity drainage from 150mm ID - 1000mm
ID.

• In addition to Guided Auger Boring, A E Yates Trenchless Solutions Ltd can also
provide Unguided Auger Boring for projects such as cross-county water and gas mains where
line and level is not as critical as for gravity sewer projects. This technique involves installing
steel casings up to 1200mm diameter, usually in 6 or 12m individual lengths onto which
successive sections are added to form one continous installation.

Practical Example : In Lahore orange line metro train project.

• Benefits of Auger Boring: Timeless application that creates extremely stable bores

• Simple, effective method with a high success rate

• Little to no disruption to surface, buildings, rail or traffic

• Safe, fast method with low operating costs

• Safety PrecautionsCheck for overhead wires in area of the launching pit

• Obtain utility clearances and locates before you start your project

• Confirm critical utility locations by excavation before you start

• Do not trust drawings

• Cost of taking out utilities can be high

• Cable, hydro, fiber optics

• Safe launching and exit pit slopes

• No workers allowed in exit pit during the boring operation
