Universal Design for Learning (UDL): PowerPoint supports all students of learning. It uses visuals
to support visual learners and as well as words on each slide to support the hearing impaired or
ELLs. The narration tool is useful for students who are visually impaired or auditory learners. The
hands-on book they have will be an exact copy of the Powerpoint so students who have trouble
staying focused can follow along with their book.

Lesson idea implementation: The lesson will first start out by the teacher passing out the little
booklets for each student. The teacher will pull up the PowerPoint and play it as a movie while the
kids follow along with their books. After the PowerPoint video is over, the teacher will pull up a
blank screen with a word bank on the side on the Interactive Board. The teacher will then call on
different students to come up and draw a different part of a flower until the flower is complete.
There will be a word bank on the side of the Interactive Board with the words: stem, flower, leaf,
and root. The students who drew a particular part of a flower will then drag the word over to the
part they drew and tell the class what part it is.

The whole lesson will take about 20-25 minutes to complete. I think it will be fun to have the
students come up and draw the parts of a flower so they can practice fine motor skills and their
artistic skills. I will conclude the lesson by a quick review by pointing to random parts of the plant
on the board and having the students write it on a white board to see if they all understand what
they just learned. I could extend this lesson to have the students draw their own flower on a piece
of paper and label it. This way the students can work independently and draw any type of flower
they want.

Reflective Practice: I feel like this activity could impact student learning by helping the students
have hands on materials and someone to read what is on their booklet to them. Some first graders
may not be able to read that well, so the narration of the video can help them when they want to
view it at home. To extend the lesson, I could bring in a real flower and label the parts of the
flower while also teaching the kids the functions of each of the parts. Another technology tool that
is always great to use is BrainPop. They have a great video on the parts of a plant that I could use
as an introductory video to the unit.
