65 killed on Malaysian roads in last 5 days

KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 65 people were killed in road accidents nationwide since the
start of Op Selamat, which began in conjunction with the Chinese New Year travel
rush.
Motorcyclists comprise the majority of deaths, at 47, Bernama reported.
A total of 8,570 road crashes involving 13,038 vehicles were recorded during the
period, Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk
Azisman Alias said in a statement, on Thursday.
He said Selangor led the list of states with the highest number of traffic accidents, with
2,701 cases, followed by Johor (1,348) and Kuala Lumpur (1,019).
Op Selamat has so far seen the issuance of 125,464 summonses – 77,042 of which
involve six main offences, including the use of mobile phones while driving.
The road safety operation ends on Feb 1.
Drunk driver crashes car into Penang kuih stall, killing
woman, injuring man

KEPALA BATAS: A man driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs lost control
of his vehicle before it slammed into a roadside kuih stall along JalanBertam Indah
here, this morning.
The 10am crash killed 40-year-old stall owner Roslinda Mohamad Isa; while her 44-
year-old husband, Mat Subri Saad, sustained serious injuries.
It is understood that Roslinda was was pronounced dead at the Emergency Ward of
the Kepala Batas Hospital, where Mat Subri is currently being treated. The 31-year-
old driver of the Proton Saga Iswara, which was heading towards Paya Keladi, was
unhurt in the accident.
According to police, the driver had a high blood alcohol level and also tested positive
for drugs.
“We have arrested the driver to assist in the investigation of the case,” Seberang Prai
Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said in a statement
today.
