METHOD STATEMENT – RCD BORED PILE

1. Introduction
Reverse circulation drilling or RC drilling is a method of drilling which uses dual wall drill rods that
consist of an outer drill rod with an inner tube. These hollow inner tubes allow the drill cuttings to be
transported back to the surface in a continuous, steady flow. In non-cohesive ground condition, a
temporary steel casing is inserted to prevent soil collapse or ground water inflow. The casing is either
screwed using the rig or vibrated into place using ancillary service crane. Further explanation of RCD
bored pile method will be explained below.

All the information in this method statement are reference only. Actual method statement for
implementation will be submitted for approval before implementation

2. Scope of works
The scope of work is as follow:

- Heavy equipment mobilization/demobilization

- Drilling by Reverse Circulation Drill method

6. Method of Work
6.1. Working Sequence
Pile boring is planned to use 2 set of RCD machine, working parallelly. The 1st sequence is piling
on Pier 1 & Pier 2, then the 2nd sequence is on Abutment A & Abutment B.

6.2. Preparation
Surveyor to start marking the pile position/temporary steel casing location on the embankment
platform.

Piling marking

Pile marking in accordance with the latest and approved shop drawings. After the marking has
been done, temporary steel casing can be installed using vibro-hammer or other method, as can
be seen on figure below.

Temporary steel casing installation

Necessity of temporary steel casing is determined in accordance with the soil condition, and if
temporary steel casing is needed, the length will be determined later in accordance with the soil
condition.

Temporary steel casing installation.

Surveyor to continue to supervise the temporary steel casing installation, this intended to make
sure that the location point of the pile is correct and the verticality is maintained.

6.3. Pile Boring

After casing is installed in place, bore piling can be carried out. Prepare the RCD bored pile
machine in place, and connect air compressor pipe into the RCD machine. Connect the output
pipe from the bottom of the machine and point the output hose towards the river, as can be seen
on figure below.

Bored piling using RCD machine.

When boring, water, bentonite or polymer slurry is used, the function of the bentonite slurry
and/or polymer are to stabilize the wellbore, and controlling the formation pressure so that the
side of the wellbore is stable and not collapsed or eroded. Also, the slurry can help cooling and
lubricating the drill string and drill bit.

Slurry top elevation shall always be kept more than 2 meters above the underground water, or
river water (whichever is higher).

Verticality and the diameter of the borehole shall be checked by using Koden machine during
and/or after completion of the drilling.

Removal of the sediment will be done in accordance with the specification in 2 steps, the 1st
removal of sediment is before rebar cage installation, and the 2nd removal of sediment is done
before concrete casting.

6.4. Reinforcement Steel Bar Installation

After the drilling works have been finished, then eject the RCD drill machine, and then prepare
for the next piling point. Prior to installation of rebar cage, verticality check and the 1st removal
of sediment will be done. Then carry out installation of reinforcement steel bar on the bore hole.

With pile diameter is 1.8 m, and pile depth is 60 m, assuming the reinforcement steel bar weight
per cubic concrete is 150 kg/m3, the total weight of concrete pile rebar that will be lifted is around
23 tons. Rebar will be lifted using crawler crane 50T, with 24.4 m boom length, working angle of
76°, and working radius 6 m as can be seen on lifting table below.

With maximum working load is 28.4 ton.

2nd set of reinforcement steel bar installation (for test pile with O-Cell – if necessary).

Install O-Cell (if necessary) for Bidirectional Load Test in rebar cage for the test pile, and install
sonic logging pipe in rebar cage for later used for grouting the O-Cell installed pile after testing.

6.5. Concrete Casting

After rebar installation is finished, then the 2nd removal of sediment will be done by using tremie
pipe, and continue to prepare the concrete casting. Concrete casting by using tremie pipe, to make
sure that the concrete is evenly distributed especially on bottom part of the bored pile, also
plugging ball will be used when concrete casting.

Concrete Casting of Bored Pile.

Concrete casting until nearly top of the pile cap, so that after pile head cutting, there still have
rebars as a starter bar and connecting from concrete piles to pile cap.

6.6. Temporary Casing Retraction

After concrete casting is done, then retract the temporary casing using vibro-hammer and crawler
crane, as can be seen on figure below.

Temporary Steel Casing Retraction.

Concrete soundness shall be checked by Sonic Logging after 3-7 days (or accordance with the
specification).

7. Health, Safety, & Environmental

General health and safety rules and regulations:

1) Ensure that all safety precautions and recommendations outlined in the Risk Assessments have
been applied.

2) Make sure that:

 All personnel including Third Parties are safety inducted prior to site entry.

 Workers are trained and competent in their duties.

 Operators are qualified, hold license for machine operation and trained in the maintenance of
machinery.

 All tools and equipment are in safe and good conditions.

3) Provide First Aid Facility on working Site in case of minor injury treatment.

4) Arrange for all personnel the pertinent Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including safety
helmet, safety boots (Boots up to the knees are required when clearing shrubs and trees, to avoid
snake bites), ear / eye protectors, dust mask, gloves and reflective vest (When working in vicinity
of the road or nearby the excavator or other heavy machines).

5) Place warning signs, barricades, lightings or fences at relevant locations such as:

 Critical excavations.

 Access roads where traffic flow is disturbed by the work – use signalmen wearing high visibility
clothes to arrange traffic.

etc. to have proper maintenance and proper disposal location to avoid damage to surrounding
environment.

9) Ensure vehicle movement route, in and out, and along the project area.

10) Ensure dump truck carrying excavated soil (in and out project site and along route to disposal area)
is properly checked to avoid accidental load spillage.
