Statement of the Problem

The research aimed to understand and defined the roles and obligations of working-mother and student
under the changing and sometimes conflicting situations through the used of the research questions:

1. What are your experiences of being a working-mother and student at the same time?
2. How do you play your roles as a working-mother and student at the same time?
3. How do you feel about being a working-mother and student at the same time?
4. What were(are) the ( biggest) challenges you faced as a student with children/child?
5. How has your experience as a student — juggling family, work and academic
responsibilities — shaped your approach to higher education?

Theoretical Framework

Feminist standpoint theory and feminist perspective were used as theoretical fits on this study. Feminist
standpoint theory focused on the knowledge that comes from the experiences and challenges that were
common to women (Wood, 2009). Feminist standpoint allowed for an understanding of women’s
experience as well as challenges in having a child. In order to understand of those outside the dominant
group, one must research from their perspective, feminist standpoint stated that the group that share
common social position and, therefore, they share a common experiences (Lorber, 2001), which the present
research study seeked to identify. The research was an exploratory study of the challenges experienced
student mother today. Being a mother, she was the primary caregiver of their respective households and
has the responsibility of nurturing their child, which it consumed the woman’s time and energy.

METHODOLOGY
The methodology discussed in full details about the Research Design of the study, the
participants and the Sampling Methodology, the Research Instruments used, data gathering and
analysis. Design The research study aimed to investigate the experience of student-mother -
how it is be a student and a mother at the same time. The present study is Qualitative using a
phenomenological approach as a methodology to answer the research question. Qualitative
research study according to Mills and Birks (2014) “aimed to examine phenomena that impact
on the lived reality of individuals or groups in a particular cultural or social context” (p.9).
Phenomenology aimed to accurately describe the phenomenon without a pre-existing
knowledge to a framework, but remaining truth to the facts (Groenewald, 2004). M

Participants

BS student mothers participated in the study. According to Smith qualified participants for the present
study were identified using purposive sampling. Using purposive sampling, it enhanced the
understanding of the researchers to the selected individuals or groups’ experience (Dever & Frankel,
2000) that can help them to choose their participants that will be fit for the study. Respondents were
screened based on the following criteria listed below: a. female; b. currently enrolled in higher
educational institutions; c. has a child/children; d. she had the custody of the child; e. and willing to
participate in the study
