CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The rise in the use of the internet has led to many changes in our daily life. In particular,
this rise has also led to the rise of online gaming. Online gaming can refer to any type of game
that someone can play through the internet or over a computer network. Most of the time, online
gaming refers to the video games played over the internet, where multiple players are in different
locations around the world. In most cases, online games are freeware programs that can be used
for an unlimited time and are available for free. Most percentage of web games available
nowadays is written in Flash, Shockwave and Java languages. Because of that, they feature more
primitive game play than downloadable games.

Having an online gaming experience typically requires a high-speed internet connection.


Proper hardware will also be required whether it’s a computer or a gaming console, such as Xbox
or Play station that’s connected to the internet. Some online games require a specific piece of
controlling hardware such as a joystick or a game controller, but these days, gaming technology
has progressed to an amazing extent. Things like streaming 3-D animation graphics with superb
surround sound stereo now have the ability to make all addicted to gaming. In terms of video
games, online gaming is growing in popularity for variety of reasons. Gamers can easily find
opponents of a similar skill level when playing a head-to-head game over the internet. Players
also can compete in massively multiplayer games, where dozens of players play an ongoing game
in a virtual world. Some online games change a monthly fee for access to the video game
software.

Today, mobile games are usually downloaded from app stores as well as from mobile
operator's portals, but in some cases are also preloaded in the handheld devices by the OEM or
by the mobile operator when purchased, via infrared connection, Bluetooth, memory card or side
loaded onto the handset with a cable.

However, computers and video games also receive much more negative critics, because
games are often coined with issue such as mindless entertainment, enhanced social recluse,
sexism and consumerism. Research shows that kids who play violent video games showed on
increased in emotional arousal and a corresponding decrease of activity in brain areas involving
self-control, inhabitation and attention.
Everyone who plays video games has a different reason for playing, and the usage of the
game leads to different effects for each individual. Childhood upbringings, peer influences,
pressures at school and family issues are all factors that have a strong connection with the effects
of gaming on individuals. Video games maybe therapeutic for some people, but the small amount
of people who are negatively affected by gaming impact are many.

Background of the Study

Mobile legend is created by China developer is Moonton Technology Co. Ltd and shanghai
mulong network and technology Co.,ltd. July 11, 2016. Mobile legend bang bang is a game
designed which only for phone, this game has two opposing teams to defend the fort so as not
taken over by the opponent. Besides, mobile legend is very popular and in demand from various
circles from teenagers to adults. This game is very popular in Asian as many as ten million
accounts are known to have downloaded this game on the Google Play Store. The role is there
are two group fights to reach and destroy the enemy’s castle while defending their own castle to
defend the castle they have to control the path they pass through. There are three lines the first
is “Upper”, “Lower”, “Middle”. Those lines connect the road to the castle.

Someone who only plays the game is called player, one of developer online games
www.steam.com said if there are 12.675.696 players who download that online game and the
players are dominated by teenagers and early adults aged 15-25 years. In online games especially
is Mobile legend the player can interact with the other player to communicate and give ideas.
There are features to support their communication which are called chat room. In chat room, the
player can chat with team or enemy, Therefore, they are usually 2 using a lot of emerging special
languages that are used in mobile legend game, called as register.

Mobile Legends tournaments have been held in the region, including the annual Mobile
Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asian Competition (MSC) and even each countries having their
own local leagues such as the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL). Mobile
Legends is among the first esports title to be included as a medal event at the 2019 Southeast
Asian Games. The first ever Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championship, dubbed as M1, was
held in Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from November 15 to 17, 2019. The competition
will feature 16 teams across the world to battle it out for a prize pool of USD $250,000. Moonton
released an official spin-off game entitled Mobile Legends: Adventure (MLA), an RPG strategy
game, at the end of July 2019.
The developer also showed off cooler-looking character models, as well as an upgraded
game interface. Moonton says that the current UI has become cluttered with too many things,
and the second version is cleaner and easier on the eyes.

In 2019, Moonton and SNK had a collaboration releasing KOF skins in the game Mobile
Legends: Bang Bang. The skins have KOF skill effects and voiceovers. The 1st KOF series skins
released in the game were Iori Yagami for the hero Chou, Leona Heidern for the hero Karina,
and Athena Asamiya for the hero Guinevere. The 2nd KOF series skins released were Kula
Diamond for the hero Aurora, K' for the hero Gusion, and Orochi Chris for the hero Dyrroth.

Moonton is giving its mobile MOBA a boost under the hood. The Shanghai-based
developer is upgrading the engine for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and it’s going to be a big one
for performance.

The MLBB 2.0 update will be powered by the Unity 2017 engine and besides better
looking graphics, loading speeds have been improved by at least 60%. Moonton said that load
times from when you launch the app have been reduced from a 25 second wait to just 10
seconds, while the game will load in just 5 seconds from the original 15 seconds.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the impacts of playing mobile legends among the Junior
High School Students of Asuncion S. Melgar National High School.

Research Questions
Specifically, this study will attempt to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:


1.1 Name;
1.2 Age;
1.3 Gender;
1.4 Strand and Section?

2. What is the academic performance of the respondents in the first quarter?


3. What are the positive effects of online games (mobile legends) to the academic
performance of the respondents?
4. What are the negative effects of online games (mobile legends) to the academic
performance of the respondents?
5. Is playing online game hindrance on the student’s such as:
a. Doing of assignments/homework
b. Attending school matters/activities
6. How is compulsive gaming considered to be a psychological disorder?

Objectives of the Study

This study is intended to determine the impacts of online gaming (Mobile legends)
towards the behavior and health of the respondents. Impacts of mobile legends to the academic
performances of the respondents are also to be determined. It also aims to help the parents to
be informed about the impacts their children obtain from online gaming.

Significance of the Study

This study will be valuable and significant to children, parents, readers and future
researchers.

Students. This study is primarily important to students, for it will give them information about
the impacts they may get from online gaming.

Parent. This study will help the parents to have enough knowledge about the impacts of online
gaming among their children.

Readers. This study will help the readers to have the understanding about the impact of online
gaming.

Future Researchers. This may serve as a basis for future research that they will conduct.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this study is to find the effects of playing online games to the academic
performance of the students.

The main focus of this study is to show the possible effects of mobile games (mobile
legends) to students of ASMNHS. The research will be conducted in Asuncion S. Melgar National
High School.

Academic Performance - Is measured by taking written and oral tests, performing presentations,
turning in homework and participating in class activities and discussions. Teachers evaluate in
the form of letter or number grades and side notes, to describe how well a student has done.

Impact - The powerful or dramatic effect that something or somebody has.
