a mountain to climb
A major chunk of this month’s issue is given over to Incisor’s third review of developments in the TV white space spectrum.
I make no apologies for this, as I feel as if we are standing on the threshold of something very big indeed.
Happily, most of the time when I feel like this, it turns out to be the case. I felt like this about Bluetooth, and that was, well, rather
successful. I’ll admit that I sometimes get it wrong, too. I was terribly excited about Anoto’s revolutionary, mind-changing digital
pen and paper technology. That one didn’t do quite so well, though I still feel today that the potential was there.
Back to white space. The organisations that are putting their weight behind white space, do, though, have a massive challenge
ahead of them. That challenge is no less than to create a completely new, global wireless network. One that will form the
backbone of the buzzphrase of today – the Internet of Things.
With any nascent technology, there is typically a core group of utterly committed individuals for whom success is massively
important. These people then tend to gather around them big corporations that don’t want to be left out. The resources and
global clout of the big guys combine with the clever IP, the hard work and sheer tenacity of the ideas guys.
In the white space ecosystem, British company Neul is the driving force, and, by some quirk of fate, two of the founders of Neul
are ex-CSR founders. And most people reading this magazine will know that CSR was a very successful company in the very
successful Bluetooth market.
Neul has pulled together major global companies to work with in the creation of the Weightless Special Interest Group, the
alliance that will corral, manage and co-ordinate all wanting to become part of the white space phenomenon.
This, Incisor’s third white space special, provides the best possible insight into developments in this new industry. I hope you are
as interested and excited as I am.

TV white space spectrum

comes of age?
Incisor review part 3

Since Incisor’s last white space spectrum review in September 2011,

things have been happening fast.
We’ve seen the formation of a new industry association – the Weightless
Special Interest Group – which will manage development of technology,
standard and its commercialisation, and as the picture of the Neul and
Carlson branded customer terminal shows, not only are there now real
products, but they are available to buy.
Appropriate, then, that Incisor should feature white space again.
Activity levels in the white space sector mean that this, our third white
space feature, is bigger and more comprehensive than the two before.

A major conference entitled “Towards an EU policy for dynamic spectrum

It was marked by unusually senior attendance from a number of players
