NOUN PICTIONARY (Identifying nouns) Have students cut out pictures of nouns from magazines to make a pictionary book. First have them staple together several sheets of paper to make a booklet. Direct students to write the letters of the alphabet on the pages. Then have them paste their noun pictures on the appropriate pages. CONCENTRATION (Identifying plural nouns ) Make up a set of 12 to 20 index cards. Write nouns and their matching plural forms on separate cards. Include plurals that add -s and -es. Have students arrange the cards face down on a table in rows and columns. Then have them take turns turning over two cards. If the noun and plural form match, the student keeps the card pair and takes another turn. If the cards do not match, the student turns the cards back over and the partner takes a turn. The partner with the most pairs after the cards have all been matched wins the game. Variation: You may use pairs of nouns on cards that make up a compound word when put together. A STORY CHART (Identifying parts of speech) Distribute copies of children’s readers to small groups of students. Have students make a chart with three columns labeled Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives. Have students read through a story and identify all the nouns, verbs, and adjectives they can find. Let pairs work together to make a Parts of Speech chart for the story. @TeachNowcom www. Then have groups work together to write simple sentences using action verbs that tell about each animal. VERB CHARADES (Using action verbs in a sentence) Write some action verbs on index cards (examples: sit, ump, bend, throw, read, skip, laugh, and cry). Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of cards. Have students choose a card and take turns acting out the verb they chose. Then have students write a second sentence about the same picture using action verbs in the past tense, NAME GAME (Nouns and adjectives) Play a guessing game with children in which you describe an object using adjectives. For example, you may say “I am thinking of a noun. It is red and round.” Students may guess apple. For each guess that is incorrect, add another noun. Start by saying you are going ona trip and are taking a blue notebook. Have the next student repeat your phrase and add an item, using a descriptive adjective before the noun. For example, the student might say: |am going on a trip and | am taking a blue notebook and a red pencil. Each student in turn adds another item. GRAB BAG (Nouns, verbs, and adjectives) Place index cards with a variety of nouns, verbs, and adjectives written on them in a bag. Have a student pick two cards from the bag, then make up a sentence using the two cards. Divide the class into groups of four or five students. Have groups combine their words to write a story using as many nouns, verbs, and adjectives as possible. Encourage them to add their own words to their stories.
