© The class will review the order of units for the metric system using the mnemonic King Henry
Doesn¶t Mind Drinking Chocolate Milk for Kilo, Hecto, Deka, Meter/Unit, Deci, Centi, Milli.
2 Lyrics will be passed out to each student for The Metric Song and we will learn to sing it as a
class. (song courtesy of http://www.songsforteaching.com/kathleencarroll/metricsong.htm
3 Colored paper will be passed out to each student. The paper will be folded in half hot dog style
(long ways . The student will go down the paper long ways and draw a line across every 4 cm. to
give 7 rectangles. Then the student will start with the top rectangle and write Kilo, the second
Hecto, the third Deka, fourth Meter/Unit, fifth Deci, sixth Centi, and the seventh last recangle Milli.
The same steps to draw the lines will be followed on the inner right side of the paper. These
seven rectangles will display the values of the different units. Starting at the top it will read .00© kl,
km, kg, (Kilo , the second .0© (Hecto , third .© (Deka , fourth © (Meter/Unit , fifth ©0. (Deci , sixth
©00. (Centi , and seventh ©000. (Milli . The teacher will point out that from top to bottom is biggest
to smallest.
4 The teacher will then write a number (decimal or whole on the board and choose two different
units; one to start on and the other to change to.
For example:
©.285dKm= ______cm

5 The students will place their newly created flip chart in front of them with the fold away from them.
The teacher will have them lift up the flaps for Deka and Centi (per the example . The teacher will
instruct them to count how many spaces they are from each other and whether they are moving
to the left or right.
For example:
When you start at Deka you move three spaces to the Left to get to Centi.
c The teacher will then instruct the students to move the decimal the same amount of spaces and
in the same direction as their flip chart.
For example:

©.285

7 After several practice numbers the Metric Measurement Conversion worksheet will be passed
out. The teacher will go over the first few with the class, and the rest will be completed
individually.
