Airflex
Airflex® clutches and brakes
were the first to feature
drum type design for de-
manding oil industry applica-
tions. That was more than 40
years ago when they were
known as Fawick Airflex
clutches.
Cool-running, rugged and ver-
satile, Airflex clutches and
brakes are used in oil explora-
tion, production and transport
—performing productively in drill-
ing platforms, drawworks, jack-
up rigs, semi-submersible drilling
rigs, drill ships, tankers, pipe-laying
barges and service boats.
Ariflex clutches, brakes, rotorseals,
and quick release valves are manufac-
tured and sold by Eaton Corporation and
distributed by Mid-Continent Supply Co.
Capacities 1,000 to 760,000 Ib. in.; VC ven-
tilated models to 16,000,000 Ib. in. Single,
dual and triple passage rotorseals, quick
release valves and mufflers.

Type BD
The BD rotorseal provides a reliable
means of transferring a fluid to two
rotating components on the same
shaft. Each passage can be used
for a different fluid if desired; for
instance, air for clutch actuation and
oil for bearing lubrication.
The inlet ports have standard V*
inch pipe threads. A 1A inch outlet
port in the rotorseal flange could
be used to feed one of the shaft
mounted components. The second
outlet requires drilling of the shaft.

Type AD Type FDA

Type AD
Your application may involve the same conditions as the
BD rotorseal, but you may require a smaller diameter
mounting flange. The type AD rotorseai will fill your needs.
A 1/4 inch inlet port is provided on the rotorseal body for
each of the passages. Both passages can discharge
directly into the rotating shaft in your machinery. However,
a 1A inch port on the mounting flange provides an optional
outlet for the outer passage.
TypeADP
The Type ADP rotorseal is attached to the shaft with a
pipe threaded outlet instead of a mounting flange. It is
designed for the same service conditions as the AD
rotorseal. The outer fluid passage feeds into the end of the
machinery shaft through a one inch pipe threaded shaft,
while a 1/4 inch port in the side of the shaft serves as an
outlet for the inner passage. Both fluid inlet ports are
1
/4 inch.

Type FDA Type PDF

The FDA rotorseal was designed to handle larger volumes
than the BD type. One Vz inch pipe inlet port is provided
for each of two concentric fluid passages. The center
passage discharges directly into the rotating shaft. The
outer passage discharges into the rotating shaft or through
a Vz inch port in the mounting flange.
The Type FDF rotorseal, when compared to Type FDA, has
a smaller mounting flange diameter and is shorter in
length. In all other aspects, it is designed for the same
service conditions.

In most applications, only one fluid
is to be transmitted to a rotating
assembly. This group of rotorseals
will handle most medium volume,
single passage requirements. Exter-
nal threads on the seal shaft and
standard pipe threads on the inlet
port make installations an easy job.
Rotorseals are available for high
pressure service.

This design incorporates a mount-
ing flange for attachment to the
machinery shaft or assembly.

Airflex
QUICK RELEASE VALVES
AND MUFFLERS

TheAirflex quick release valve is a

quick dumping valve that facilitates
the release of air from a pressurized
chamber. In essence, it provides an
exhaust port at the chamber rather
than exhausting through long supply
lines and control components.
The valves are designed to exhaust
when a pressure drop occurs in the
air supply line. They allow pressuriz-
ing of a chamber, but will open to
exhaust with the controlling air
valve, which creates the initial pres-
sure drop in the inlet air line.
The valves have a lightweight
plunger that permits fast response
and insures long valve life. They are
self-cleaning and do not require
lubrication.
These valves are used to prevent
overlap between alternately pres-
surized components, sluggish oper-
ation and excessive wear in high
speed cycling equipment such as
punch presses and cut-off machines.
To help you comply with OSHA
regulations, mufflers are available to
reduce exhaust noise. The mufflers
are custom designed so that they
are an integral part of the quick
release valve.
In some rotating applications, it may
be more convenient to install the
quick release valve at a different
location instead of on the turning
pressurized component. For these
situations, the quick release valve
can be combined with the rotorseal.

Water-Cooled Tensioners,
Brakes and Clutches.

Compact Airflex® air-actuated,

water-cooled units are ideal for
heavy-duty oil field braking and ten-
sioning applications. Applications
include auxiliary brakes, safety
brakes, windlasses, and other
drilling equipment.
Airflex water-cooled units range in size
from 7.75 in. (196.9 mm) to 36 in.
(914.4 mm) disc diameters in single and
multi-disc configurations.
Models designated WC handle light to ^
medium-duty applications, providing torque to
51,000 Ib. in. (5,758 Nm) and thermal
capacities to 100 HP (74.6 kW).
The Airflex WCB model handles medium to
very heavy-duty applications. WCB models are
capable of developing up to 1,800,000 Ib. in
(203,220 Nm) of torque and continuous ther-
mal capacities to 1,960 HP (1,462.2 kW).
The Airflex WC unit is also available in a spring-
applied, air-released model (WCS) for applica-
tions requiring automatic engagement when air
pressure is removed.
