Q1. In cattle, white face (W) is dominant to solid (w), black coat (B) is dominant to red (b).

(a) A pure breed white face black coat bull is mated to a solid red cow, and their F1
hybrids are self-crossed, calculate the probability of producing a white face red
cattle in F2 generation using a Punnett square. (8 marks)

(b) If one of the F1 hybrid is back crossed with the solid red cow, state the expected
ratio of phenotypes in the offspring of this cross. Use a Punnett square to support
your answer. (4 marks)

Q2. In a cross between a black and a white guinea pig, all members of the F1 generation are
black. The F2 generation is made up of approximated ¾ black and ¼ white guinea pigs.

(a) Diagram this cross by using a Punnett square and complete it by showing all the
genotypes and phenotypes involved. (6 marks)

(b) State the genotype and phenotype of the offspring if two F2 white guinea pigs
are mated. (2 marks)

(c) Two different matings were made between black members of the F2 generation
with the results shown in Table 1.

Table 1
Cross Offspring
Cross 1 All black
Cross 2 ¾ black, ¼ white
Determine the parental genotypes of each of the crosses. (4 marks)

Q3. Isabell wished to study two characters of a plant; flower colour and flower position.
Both traits were determined by two different genes with each of a pair of alleles. The
alleles for red colour and axial position are dominant. Two flowers were crossed and
the F1 generation is shown in Table 2.

Table 2
Number of plant Trait
225 Red, axial position
75 Red, terminal position
218 White, axial position
81 White, terminal position

By using the symbols of R = red, r = white, A = axial and a = terminal, answer the
following questions based on Table 2.

(a) State the genotypes of the parent flowers. (2 marks)

(b) List all types of gametes produced by each parent as a result of random
assortment. (3 marks)

(c) By using a Punnette square, show the F1 generation and their phenotypic ratios.
(4 marks)

Figure 1.1

State whether each of the statements id True of False.

(a) Plants in P generation is also known as true breeding plants. (1 mark)

(b) The genotypes for F2 generation is homozygous. (1 mark)

(c) The phenotypic ratio for F3 generation is 3:1. (1 mark)

(d) Purple and white flowers are knows as trait for flower color. (1 mark)

(e) The above cross is known as dihybrid cross. (1 mark)
