Committee:UNIFEM

COUNTRY:NORTH KOREA

DELEGATE NAME:AFIFA

Topic area:prevention of violence against women in community

Domestic violence has harmful physical and psychological health correlates; Malnutrition is the leading
risk factor for mortality in the world, contributing to nearly 12 percent of all deaths and 16 percent of all
disability-adjusted life years lost globally. Estimates of assaults on women by partners range from
approximately 2 to 4 million per year. The Illinois State Police recorded 114,373 domestic violence
offenses in 2000; 76 percent of these offenses involved assault/ battery charges. A total of 54,640 orders
of protection were issued, with 4,574 of these orders being violated. About 25 percent of all hospital
emergency department visits by women result from domestic assaults. .

North Korea believes that measures should be taken to ensure that violence against women is explicitly
addressed in health and development policymaking by the governments. Fund research and violence
prevention programs particularly those working with girls affected by HIV to empower them to have
control over sexual reproduction and health. Protect women’s legal and human rights to increase their
economic security, economic penalties for marital rape and provide safe havens for women subject to
violence. In order to prevent child marriage improve local knowledge of the social and health
consequences of child marriage and to encourage attitudes that favor marriage at a later age .
Strengthen support for alternatives to child marriage, especially efforts to keep girls in school
Increase endorsements for delayed marriage by religious leaders and other community
stakeholders. North Korea brings the attention of committee to very important issue female
genital mutilation. All women, including those who have been mutilated must have access to sexual and reproductive
health services including testing contraception and education. North Korea calls upon all member states to formulate and
promote guidelines for care particularly child birth of girls and women who have undergone female genitalial mutation
also to work with all the sectors of government and agencies and nongovernmental organizations in support of the practice
as a major contribution to attain millennium development goals on promoting gender equality and empowerment of
women reducing child mortality and improving women health. Also enact and enforce legislation to protect girls and
women from all sorts of violence including community, physical and psychological.
North Korea hopes and expects that the committee would pay special attention to these important topics and chalk out
solutions which are tangible, practical and can be implemented.
