There are two important behavioural studies

Ohio State University (1940s)
As leadership studies that were aimed at identifying the appropriate traits
didn't yield any conclusive results, a group of people from Ohio State
University developed a list of 150 statements from their generated responses
that included 1,800 hundred statements. The list was designed to measure
nine different behavioural leadership dimensions. The resulting questionnaire
is now well-known as the LBDQ or the Leaders Behaviour Description
Questionnaire.
As part of the study, the LBDQ was administered to various groups of
individuals ranging from college students and their administrators, private
companies including military personnel. One of the primary purposes of the
study was to identify common leadership behaviours. After compiling and
analysing the results, the study led to the conclusion that there were two
groups of behaviours that were strongly correlated. These were defined as
Consideration (People Oriented behavioural Leaders) and Initiating Structure
(Task Oriented Leaders).
leadership influences and as a result, is the best determinant of his or her
leadership.

University of Michigan (1950s)

Lead by the famous organizational psychologist, Dr. Rensis Likert, the
leadership studies at the University of Michigan identified three characteristics
of effective leadership; two of which were previously observed in studies that
had been conducted at Ohio State University. The study showed that task and
relationship-oriented behaviours weren't of major significance within the
world of organizational psychology. However, it was the third observation that
introduced a new concept, of participating leadership
This research stream led to the discovery of two broad categories of
behaviors:

1. Task-oriented leader behaviors

2. People-oriented leader behaviors

1.Task Oriented Leaders

The task concerned leaders are focusing their behaviors on the
organizational structure, the operating procedures (S.O.P.) and they
like to keep control. Task-oriented leaders are still concern with their
staff motivation; however it's not their main concern. They will favor
behaviors that are in line with:
Information gathering
Initiating
Organizing
Clarifying

Example of task-oriented leader

 Criticism of task- oriented Leader
1.A major criticism of task-oriented leadership is that it runs the risk
of overlooking the welfare and happiness of the staff.
2.Pushing the staff to complete the task without paying attention
to their personal needs can result in a team which feels undervalued.

 Strengths of task-oriented .
1.The most obvious strength for this style of leadership is that it
ensures deadlines are met and tasks are completed.
2.It can be highly effective for industries which need to meet strict
deadlines while simultaneously maintaining a high standard of
quality.

CRITICISM/STRENGTH OF TASK-
ORIENTED LEADER
2.People oriented leaders

The people- oriented leaders are focusing their behaviors on

ensuring that the inner needs of the people are satisfied. Thus, they
will seek to motivate their staff through emphasizing the human
relation. People oriented leaders still focus on the task and the
results; they just achieve them through different means. Leaders
with a people focus will have behaviours that are in line with:
 Encouraging
 Observing
 Listening
 Coaching and Mentoring

Example of people -oriented leadership

 Starbucks approaches their business with a people-oriented
type of innovation, making their workplace more just and
rewarding for their employee. The company offers many perks
to employees including
• Weekly free coffee for all associates
Health care to part-time and full-time employee.

 Criticism of people- oriented Leader

The major criticism to this style of leadership is that with a focus on
the relationships between the leader and the staff the actual task at
hand can sometimes be overlooked.
If staff, see the leader accommodating their every need they may
start to take liberties to see how far they can push the leader with
what they will get away with.

 strength of people- oriented Leader.

People -oriented leaders ensure they have a positive and

motivated workforce.
Staff inspired to work and will feel valued and appreciated.
Staff may also to work creatively and innovatively, taking risks
and challenging key operations
