ADMINISTERING AN INTRADERMAL INJECTION

Goal: To safely deliver prescribed drug dose to area just below the epidermis,

producing the appearance of a wheal or blister at the site of injection.


Needs

1. Assemble equipment and check physician’s order.


2. Explain procedure to the patient.
3. Perform hand hygiene. Don gloves.
4. If necessary, withdraw medication from ampule or vial.

5. Select area on inner aspect of forearm that is lightly pigmented or with lesser
hair.
6. Cleanse area with wet cotton ball.
7. Use nondominant hand to spread the skin taut over injection site.
8. Remove needle cap.

9. Place needle almost flat against patient’s skin, bevel side up. Insert needle.
(Insert only 1/8 inch with the entire bevel on skin).
10. Slowly inject agent until wheal is created.

11. Once wheal is created, withdraw needle at the same angle it was inserted. Trace
or encircle the wheal with black ink ballpen.

12. Do not massage area. Tell patient not to rub or scratch site.

13. Place needle’s cover using scoop method. Discard needle and syringe into
appropriate receptacle.
14. Assist patient into comfortable position.

15. Remove and discard gloves. Perform hand hygiene.

16. Document the procedure.

17. Observe area for signs of reaction at ordered intervals, usually 30 minutes.
Inform patient of the inspection. Report to the physician if there is a reaction
such as redness on the site.
