ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT
Of the English Department Theatre Play Production of S.Y. 2017-2018
(February 15, 2018 / 3:00 PM—5:00 PM & 6:00 PM—8:00 PM)

For years now, the College of Liberal Arts,

specifically the English department, has been organizing a
production. The aforementioned production—aside from
being a course requirement of the Bachelor of Arts in English
graduating students (including those students from BS Social
Work who enrolled in the same subject)—aimed at providing
students the avenue to showcase their talents in acting as well
as to promote the Arts. The same has been a culture in the
college for it materializes the goals and objectives of the same
that in turn benefits the entire studentry as a whole.

The details that follow include both the successes and

the struggles the staff encountered before the production had
been realized. This also summarizes the processes the
production underwent before it was finally considered a
success.

CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE

Venue

Since there were more than Two Thousand sold

tickets, the department wrote a letter asking permission
to use the Juanito Bruno Gymnasium for the venue to
accommodate the anticipated number of audience in
February; however, the gymnasium was under renovation
and was only ready to accommodate the anticipated
audience on March 31, 2018 which was more than a month later than the scheduled day of
performance.
As an alternative, the department
asked permission to use the mini stage of
the College of Engineering for the same
purpose; however, due to unfortunate
circumstance, the production staff and
performers could not have their regular
rehearsals in the afternoon since the
college was having the review in
preparation for the engineering board
examination that was fast approaching
during the time. Hence, the staff had to
look for another venue.

The Social Hall of the College of Teacher Education as the last possible option, on
the other hand, had been reserved for other college’s activity on the day of the performance.
Therefore, it was a difficult time to look for another venue. But with the camaraderie of the
WMSU’s officials and the CLA Dean Dr. Adrian P. Semorlan, the production staff, headed
by the English department chair and creative director herself, Dr. Fhadzralyn Aidil-
Karanain, spoke with the college concerned, and later on agreed that the latter would use
the venue in the morning and the former in the afternoon.

Crowd Capacity of the Venue (Social Hall, CTE)

The Social Hall of the College of

Teacher Education only has a crowd capacity
that ranges from 500 to 800 persons. Thus, the
possibility to accommodate the crowd wholly
was low. But with the production staff’s
openness to alternatives, the huge number of
audience was accomodated by having the
performance twice. The first performance
transpired from 3:00PM—5:00PM and the
second was from 6:00PM—8:00PM.

Shorter Time for Stage Preparation (backdrop, lighting, sound system, etc.)
The performance was
scheduled to start at 3:00 in the
afternoon; however, since the venue
was first occupied for other college’s
activity in the morning, the
production staff had a very minimal
time to prepare for necessary
arrangements in the venue. Hence,
the only choice was to do it as fast as
possible. Nevertheless, with the combined efforts of all, the performance started on time.

FUND ALLOCATION FROM THE PRODUCTION

Part of the accumulated fund was given to the WMSU management and to the
College of Liberal Arts (CLA) for future projects that will benefit students. The remaining
fund is intended for the English department’s projects such as facility improvement. A Flat
Screen television and sofa were purchased from the fund. Repairs of other malfunctioned
equipments were also funded by the same. Similarly, a part of it was also used for providing
fund during college and department’s student activities. This further ensures that the support
given by the University and its officials, including the efforts of the production staff, was
received, apprecaited and not wasted.
From the preparation phase to the final performance, each member of the production
staff, the faculty members of the English department, and the CLA Dean’s office did not
only do their best as the ones tasked to perform the responsibility, but did what was required
of them, and that therefore worth of the support given to them.
