 Once the area underneath the pipe has been excavation locally the hanger system will be
installed and bolted together.
 The bolts used to join the hanger system are M12 Bolts and M8.8 grade.
 Outside the encroachment limits a slip trench shall be excavated by hand to a depth of
300mm along the length the excavation. If no services are found then the excavator shall
excavate to the depth of the slip trench only, in the area where the slip trench was
completed outside the encroachment limits. Toothless bucket will be used. This shall be
repeated until either the excavation reaches full depth or a service is uncovered. If a
service is uncovered then the service shall be fully exposed by hand excavation only.
 Prior to the works around the UKPN High Voltage Cables, UKPN will be contacted to allow
them if they want to provide a UKPN operative/supervisor to provide a watching brief while
we work around the UKPN HV Cables.
 When the excavation reaches the encroachment line of any service the concrete
road construction shall be undermined by using Air Lance/Soil Picks and insulated
shovels or insulated grafts and then broken out using the hand held breaker once
the concrete has been undermined.
 A length of timber will be placed underneath the undermined concrete prior to the concrete
been broken out to act as a barrier between the hand held breaker and a potential service.
 Under no circumstances shall forks, picks, bars or any other sharp ended tools be used.
 If there is additional concrete or any other unforeseen item present within the excavation
then the breaking activity shall cease and be assessed by the works supervisor to
determine whether the concrete can be removed safely.
 All services crossing the pit will be supported using suitable sized timber & ratchet straps
or i-beams.
 All ladders must be tied at sides and extend above ground level by 1000mm minimum.
 Access will be provided to both sides of the excavation to prevent operatives climbing
across the both the Thames Water 24” Main and UKPN electrical ducts.
 Surplus material to be deposited in a dumper & removed to the agreed storage location, for
removal from site as required by grabs truck.
 Roads, footpaths and working areas to be kept clean and clear of debris, which can cause
a trip hazard, particularly in the vicinity of the open excavations.
 All services encountered shall be carefully excavated around by hand and supported
where necessary.
 Careful excavation will be used to carry out the entire excavation as per safe digging
proceess below which is sketched out in the attached appendix:
- After services are identified & marked on the ground the supervisor will decide the best
place to start excavation (greater than 500mm from known services).
- The tarmac will be cut in this area and broken and removed using the pecker on the
excavator if outside the encroachment limits, if within the encroachment limits then the tar
will be broken by hand held breakers.
- The 200mm deep reinforced concrete slab will be removed from beneath same using
spotted machine breaker to reduce HAVS when outside the encroachment limits.
- The pit will be dug from a face from this initial point in both directions always from this safe
face which has no services in same.
 It is anticipated that Trench shoring will not be needed in the top metre of dig but shoring
will be needed when we need to go lower - shoring will consist of a MGF tank brace and
sheet piles & cross boarding as per Appendix 2.6. All temporary works designs have been
developed by a competent designer and the design will be approved by FLO prior to use.
 The excavator with a toothless bucket will only be used to dig when it is safe to do so. A
timber template made from 9” x 3” timber will be inserted around the pits as a guide for the
sheet piles. It can also be used for attaching edge protection on to same.
 The 4 corner sheet piles will be inserted first. These will be held in place using a timber
cross strut at each corner to prevent them from falling over.
 The parts of the Top frame will be lowered into excavation in pieces and assembled
together then cross struts inserted to hold bottom of corner sheet piles.
 The Top frame legs will be hung using chains from the trench sheets.
 The sheet piles will then be inserted on all faces as per the temporary works design.
 The material from bottom of piles will be hand dug with spades. The ground ahead of the
sheet will be hand dug and the sheet dropped into position, the soil in front of the sheet will
be reinstated to provide the necessary toe and timber wedges will be used to tighten
sheets behind the frame. The central material will them be excavated.
 The excavated material underneath the services will be excavated into a self tipping kettle
skip when it is not possible for the excavators bucket to be lowered into the excavation.
 The excavation will be carried out to a depth of approximately 2.2m and the first 4meters
on the west side of the Linestop/Isolation Pit will be dug to approx 3.5m deep.
 There will be two number excavation 1meter deep perpendicular to the water main at the
Reception Pit (Eastern Pit) which will act as the “key” for the reinorced concrete base.
 The installation of the 2nd frame from top will be as per the top frame and this frame will be
hung from the top frame etc.
 The second frame will be inserted underneath the water main.
 Above and below the Thames Water 24” main and the UKPN electrcial ducts, the soil will
be crossboarded with either 9” x 2” or 9” x 3” timbers.

of the 24” Cast Iron Main will be undertaken by a specialist subcontractor. The
subcontractor will submit RAMS for these items separately.

 Base slab/ Thrust Block:

 The thrust block will be designed by FLO designers so that the block does not encase or
prevent futures works on the electrical ducts/cables.
 A shutter will be erected for the thrust block. No timbers from the thrust block shutter will be
touching the UKPN cables/ducts.
 The shutter will be erected by a carpenter as per the relevant design.
 Steel fixing will take place by a competent steel fixer if shown in the design.
 NOTE – No hot works will be undertaken within the excavation. If rebar members need to
be cut, this will be completed at Ground Level. A Barhale Hot Works Permit will be issued
prior to the Hot Works been completed.
 The concrete will be poured using a concrete skip and excavator.
 The UKPN electrical ducts/cables will be protected during the pour to prevent any concrete
from going onto the UKPN ducts.
 A 50mm electric poker will be used to vibrate the concrete.
 The concrete will be allowed to set until it has reached the required strength as per the
design.
