Balloon-Powered Car

Background: We have learned about potential energy and kinetic energy.

Potential energy is stored energy that an object has because of its position. Kinetic
energy is the energy an object has because of its motion.

Design Challenge: You will design and build a car powered by the air released from
a balloon. Your goal is to create a balloon-powered car that will travel as far as
possible. It must move at least three feet in a straight line. Your car should be sturdy
and remain intact when in use.

Criteria:
Your balloon car must:

• Be powered only by air escaping the balloon

• Remain intact when in use

• Move at least three feet

• Travel in a straight line

Materials:
• Balloon

• Straws

• Tape

• Sponge

• Rubberbands

• Body (plastic bottle, juice box, toilet paper tube, cardboard sheet)

• Axles (straws, wooden skewers)

• Wheels (CDs, plastic caps, cardboard circles)

Tools:
• Scissors

• Hot glue gun

• Ruler
