ScaleSoftPitzer TM:
The program is designed for the prediction, treatment, and control of common scale
deposits in oil and gas wells. Program uses: either measured pH or P-CO 2 at STP; Pitzer
electrolyte theory to calculate activity coefficients; PengRobinson EOS for gas fugacity
coefficients; ethylene glycol and methanol effect activity coefficients for calcite, barite, gypsum,
celestite, and halite. Numerous "what-if" calculations can be done using the Input sheet.
Warning:
1) The upper limits for SI calculations are up to about 300 ºC, around 20,000 psi and about 8
to 10 m ionic, but the specific limits will vary for each salt and composition. These values
are continually updated as new measurements are made.
2) Some inhibitor predictions have not been verified in the field; caution should be exercised
in the use of minimum inhibitor predictions.
3) Based upon experience, NTMP and BHPMP are selected automatically as inhibitors for
calcite and barite, respectively; to change this assumption type "0" in cell number B62 on
Input sheet and select an inhibitor number.
4) The effects of methanol on calcite, barite, gypsum, celestite, and halite are included. The
methanol temperature limit is below 200 C, and methanol range of 80% by volume for
barite, gypsum, celestite and 80% by volume for calcite and halite.

28 Illustration of possible scenario and comment on meaning --specific to the example as in the software when it is distributed: This might correspond to
production with constant downhole T and P from brines No. 1 and No. 2 on the Input Sheet (note that you must click on these boxes in Row 3 of the
29 Input Sheet.) The fraction of seawater (Brine No. 2) gradually increases until the total produced volume per day is 20,000 B/day --condition No. 11, in
30 Row 13-- at which time the amount of conate water decreases to zero in Row 23. Notice that if no inhibitor is present ("0.00" in Column T) extensive
31 scale formation is predicted for calcite and for barite over most of the production lifetime. If 10.0 mg/L Inh. is present ("10.0 in Column T) calcite scale
32 formation will be prevented at all times, but barite formation will be a persistent problem except for the two ends of the production lifetime. If the inhibitor
33 in Column T is increased eventually neither barite nor caclite is expected at any of the production conditons.

The graph shows the maximum amont of scale that could form under the various conditions. Click on this Excel Text Box to remove or move it.
