ECS-700 System Overview

Section 1 OVERVIEW
ECS-700, one of SUPCON’s WebField series control systems, is a largest and highest-end control
system that commits itself to realize automation of enterprises. It supports 16 control domains and
128 operation domains. Each control domain supports 60 control stations and each operation
domain supports 60 operation stations. Furthermore, a single domain can support 65,000 points of
tags.

ECS-700 designed in accordance with the reliability principle makes it best to ensure the security
and reliability of the system. Furthermore, all components of the system support of redundancy, so
they can still work normally when any part is in failure.

ECS-700 has the fault safety function; output modules enter into preset safety state to ensure the
safety of personnel, process system or devices under the condition of network fault.

In addition, as a large-scale combination control system, ECS-700 has the perfect engineering
management functions, such as multi-engineers cooperation, the integrality management of
configurations, on-line downloading configurations of a single-node, configuration and operation
authority management, etc; in addition, it also provides the history information on its related
operation records.

ECS-700 integrates the up-to-date Fieldbus Technology and Network Technology, which supports
of plug-in international standard Fieldbus such as PROFIBUS, MODBUS, FF, HART, etc and
various 3rd party-system-integrated.

ECS-700 System Overview

Figure 1-1 The overall structural map of the ECS-700 system

1.1 System performance

The ECS–700 system is designed and developed on international standards and industrial
standards, ensuring its availability, reliability and openness. It has the following distinctive
features:

 Openness

It integrates various standard interfaces for both software and hardware. The digital signals in
accordance with Fieldbus and traditional analog signals coexist in the system. Supply interface
modules according with MODBUS, HART, FF and PROFIBUS protocol.

 Safety

Safety and anti-interference of the ECS-700 system conform to the international standards under
the industrial operating environment. The whole system consists of power modules, controllers,
I/O modules and communication buses all that perform redundancy. I/O modules have the
channel-level of fault diagnosis function and perfect fault safety function. In addition, it also has the
function of on-line downloading and modifying single-point configuration, ensuring field operating
continuously and safely.

2
ECS-700 System Overview

 Easy to use

ECS-700 control stations apply the 19-inch international standard mechanical structure and the
components adopt the standard assembled fashion to meet different installation demands under
various kinds of application environments. Control cabinets use the double-sided vertical structure
with the unique cabinet layout, which makes them having the available performances such as the
flexibility of mixture configurations, I/O plot ratio and the convenience of maintenances. The
functions of I/O modules implement by software configuration dispensing with the design of
jumping wires. Both I/O modules and I/O module bases with exquisite encapsulation adopt the
rapid loading-unloading structure with free screws. ECS-700 software adopts the up-to-date
human-machine engineering design technology, which accords with the operation custom of
industrial control.

 Real-time

The ECS-700 system has the rapid logic control function, which supports the high-speed scan
cycle of 20ms. Furthermore, it possesses the SOE (Sequence of Events) function and its
maximum precision reaches 1ms.

 Powerful combination control

The matrix multi-domain control function and the real-time data cross-domain communication
management function of the ECS-700 system make it meet the requirements for subsection
control and centralized management towards the large-scale production process. To share data
among domains in the process control network rather than to access data among domains through
servers ensures the among-domain control and the inter-domain control having the same effect to
realize of controlling and managing the entire technical process as a whole.

 Efficient multi-people configuration

The ECS-700 system has the ability of multi-people cooperation. The distributed configuring
platform makes multi-engineers supervise a project simultaneously in their respective authority
areas, so as to enhance the work efficiency and reduce the project period to ensure the
consistency and security of the designs.

 Perfect system supervision

In addition to the powerful alarm function and the abundant fault diagnosis function, the ECS-700
system also can real-time supervise all system state information recorded in the history database,
such as super-range / prohibition / on-off variables whipping / fault, etc.

1.2 System architecture

ECS–700 is a combination control system which consists of control nodes, operation nodes,
system networks, etc. The control nodes include control stations and communication interfaces

connecting with heterogeneous systems on Process Control Network. The operation nodes
include station sites of human machine interfaces (HMI) of engineer stations, operator stations,
configuration servers, data servers, etc connecting on the Process Information Network and
Process Control Network. The system networks include I/O buses, Process Control Network,
Process Information Network, Enterprise Management Network, etc.

The Enterprise Management Network connects with each management node, and obtains
information on the system from Process Information Network via management servers, realizing of
managing or remotely supervising production processes.

The Process Information Network connects with all engineer stations, operator stations,
configuration servers and data servers, and transfers history data, alarm information and operation
records among them. In addition, all of application stations on the Process Information Network
can access real-time and historical information and issue operation instructions via data servers.

The Process Control Network connects with control stations and operation nodes that include
engineer stations, operator stations, data servers, etc., which transfers real-time data and
operation instructions between them.

The I/O Expansion Network (E-BUS) and the Local I/O Bus (L-BUS) are the internal
communication networks of control stations. The E-BUS is used to connect to controllers and
various communication interface modules (such as I/O link modules, PROFIBUS communication
modules, serial communication modules, etc.); the L-BUS is used to connect to controllers and I/O
modules, or I/O link modules and I/O modules. Both E-BUS and L-BUS are configured
redundantly.

ECS-700’s flexible structure can easily realize of the formation of large-scale systems and
implement plant-wide multi-domain management.

Figure 1-2 is shown ECS-700 data flow. The real-time data on Process Control Network are sent
to operation stations and data servers at the same time. The history data make communication via
Process Information Network, which decreases the network loads of Process Control Network and
enhances the real-time quality and reliability.

1.3 Multi-domain management

The ECS-700 system has the unique multi-domain management, which can be divided into one or
more control domains and operation domains by the scale and configuration of the instrumental
control system. Each operation domain can supervise multiple control domains simultaneously.
The ECS-700 multi-domain management function makes sure the real-time quality of process
control network by reducing network loads effectively.

According to different configurations, the ECS-700 system can implement of systemwide

centralized memory history data or multi-domain distributed memory history data.

In addition, the ECS-700 system has another function “data grouping management”, which refers
that operators monitor various data groupings based on their own authorities and engineers
perform data managements according to data groupings.

5

2.2 Controller
2.2.1 Introduction

The controller is the core of both software and hardware of a control station, which is used to
coordinate their relations and implement all control tasks. Controllers can automatically implement
data acquisition, information management, control calculation, etc. Via Process Control Network,
controllers connect to Data Server, Operator Station and Engineer Station to receive management
information from higher level and transmit property data of equipments and real-time data to
higher level. Via I/O Expansion Network (E-BUS) and I/O link module or via Local I/O Bus (L-BUS)
and I/O modules, controllers implement of exchanging information with I/O modules to fulfill input
sampling and output control of field signals.

A controller may expand up to 7 pairs of communication modules which contains I/O link module,
PROFIBUS module, serial communication module, etc. Every pair of I/O link modules can bring a
maximum of 4 racks, and each rack may bring up to 16 I/O modules.

Have the function of power-off protection: in the case of system power-off,

State Diagnosis

Controllers real-time examine hardware errors and software faults and obtain information on
internal temperatures of control cabinets, operating states of fans, failure states of power supplies,
etc. When errors or faults occur, in the system supervision software, system alarms will be
triggered and prompt operators by sounds and glinting diagrams, which are all recorded in log files
and can be queried.

Fault Safety

According to different technical requirements, AO/DO modules enter into fault safe state after
breaking communications with controllers, and then the system can choose “Output holding” or
“Output preset safe value” according to predictive configurations.

After I/O modules enter into fault safe state, the system will prompt user to perform corresponding
maintenances via “Fault safe state” in the System Supervision Software; and after the recovery of
faults, the system will prompt user to confirm the tags that had failure via “Fault recovery list”,

14
ECS-700 System Overview

ensuring the safety of the system during the period of failure and at the time of failure recovery.

Event Record

The controller records key events such as initialization, configuration downloading, system
upgrading, redundancy switching, etc.

Redundancy

A pair of redundant controllers executes a same application program. The work one is responsible
for data acquisition, process control, exchanging information on Process Control Network, etc. The
standby one is used to diagnose and monitor the state of the work one, and real-time backup the
information needed by control.

The work controller can switch to the standby one with no disturbance when it gets out of order.
The failure one can be overhauled after the completion of switching successfully, which will have
no bad influence on the control function. The key features of redundancy include:

 Automatic synchronization – The redundancy function make you do nothing about

configuration. The controller can check redundant configuration and implement
redundant processing automatically.

 Real-time synchronization – Between redundant controllers, one complete data

synchronization is fulfilled during a scanning cycle.

 Bumpless transfer – The operation of controllers will not be interrupted and the
output channels will not be disturbed during the transferring process.

 Real-time mutual diagnosis – Two redundant controllers real-time diagnose

mutually. When the work one gets out of order, the standby one will switch to the
work one in a control cycle.

 On-line replacement –The failure controller can be replaced on-line and do not
affect the control function of the work one.
