MELODIC DICTATION
1. Dictate the double bass “Ode to Joy” melody from the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. You
can find this excerpt between time stamps 3:25–4:22 in the following recording (On Canvas):

2. To dictate this melody set up your staff paper with the following parameters:
1. 1 melodic line
2. Bass clef
3. D Major
4. 4/4
5. The first note is a half note F#3

TIPS:
1. Listen to the excerpt several times, working to memorize it.
2. Dictate the melody in chunks, and do it from memory as best you can.
3. Do NOT dictate note-by-note with a keyboard. That will defeat the purpose.
4. DO double check your work by sight-sighting it!
