1. Congratulations on successfully navigating to this
student packet page! Open the InDesign file named
01_template.indd.This document has guides to help you
estimate the size of the items you will draw. You will use the
Line, Ellipse, and Rectangle tools in this project. You will apply
either a stroke or a fill to each object. Your finished project
doesn’t have to look exactly like the sample. Just have fun
learning how to use basic shapes!
2. D rawing tips:
Select the tool, click+drag to the approximate size, and release
the mouse. Hold Shift as you drag to draw a perfect circle,
square, or vertical or horizontal line. After you draw any shape,
pressing D will add a 1-point, black stroke to the frame.
Alternate technique: If you select a tool and then click on the
document, a dialog box opens which allows you to enter width
and height values. You might find that method convenient.
(It is not necessary to make all the circles in the tic-tac-toe
game the same size.)
3. Applying fills and strokes:
To apply a fill to type: Highlight the type and then choose the
color from the pull down menu next to the Fill button, on the
Control panel.

caution!
To apply a fill to an object: Select the object with the Selection
tool (black arrow). Then choose the color from the pull down
menu next to the Fill button, on the Control panel. Be sure to
select the Formatting affects container icon when the swatches
window opens.
To add a black stroke to type: With the text still highlighted,
activate the Stroke button. Select the Formatting affects Type
icon when the window opens.
To add a black stroke to an object: Select the object with the
Selection tool (black arrow). Then choose the color from the
pull down menu next to the Stroke button, on the Control
panel. Be sure to select the Formatting affects container icon
when the swatches window opens.
4. Changing the stroke width
The three stacked squares have different stroke weights. First,
deselect everything, and then press D to set the stroke and
fill to the document defaults. Use the Rectangle tool to draw
three squares at their approximate sizes. Use the Selection
arrow to move them to the stacked position, as shown. Locate
the Stroke Width field on the Control panel. Select each square
with the Selection tool. One box has the default stroke width,
the other two are values much larger than 1 pt. Use the Control
panel to adjust the stroke width for each square.
