■ Introduction
ASLI Variable Air Volume (VAV) terminal units are volume flow rate controller for
supply air on variable air volume system. These units are designed to control the
airflow rate of conditioned air into an occupied space in response to a control
signal from thermostat or Building Automation System (BAS). They could be used
in stand alone system or interfaced with LONWORKS or BACnet.

ASLI VAV terminal units consist of a casing with circular inlet spigot, rectangular
outlet connection with integral of fiberglass with black matt tissue for noise
reduction, damper blade for air volume control and cross flow differential pressure
sensor for measuring air volume.

ASLI VAV terminal units also incorporate control components, (VAV controller
actuator, and transformer) which are factory fitted. ASLI in-house testing facility
ensured that all boxes that come out from the factory are calibrated and tested to
match the controller of individual size. This allow the terminals to monitor the
desired flow rate, as dictated by the thermostat or BAS, and compensate instantly
for any changes in supply air pressure that might tend to alter the supply air
volume. Hence, the net result is a pressure independent variable air volume
system.

■ Electric Reheat Application
ASLI offers factory supplied and mounted electric coils for VAV terminal units. The electric reheat extension comes in separate unit which can be installed on
the existing basic VAV terminal units. The electric heater coils are removable from the side of the terminal units consoled within a shroud.

■ Features Of ASLI VAV Terminal Units With Electric Reheat Coils

• Heaters are factory wired and tested ensuring a high level of quality.
• Electric coil configuration and air flow is matched to eliminate hot spots, provide efficient heat transfer and to maintain element life.
• Reheat units come with a manual reset thermal cut-out to protect unit from overheating.
• 25mm (1”) 32 kg/m3 (2 lb) density fiberglass internal insulation to prevent air erosion.
• Magnetic contactors are provided as standard on stages heaters for de-energizing or disconnecting power to heating coils.

• Minimum kW – Single phase = 0.5 kW/stage, three phase = 1.5 kW/stage.
• Minimum air velocity should be 1m/s.
• Minimum air volume must be greater than minimum air volume listed or 70 CFM per kilowatt.
• Static pressure loss of coil is negligible, therefore the minimum static pressure drop is equal to basic unit value.

■ Electric Reheat Coil Selection Guide

Reheat Selection Chart 4. With the point of intersection from step 3, the air temperature rise (ATR),
can be obtained by interpolating between the air temperature rise lines
on the graph.
5. To verify the selection, sum the air temperature rise and the temperature
of the primary air. The sum total should be less then 120˚F.

Selection Example
Select electric coil for a size 10” VAV Terminal with a minimum air flow of
600 CFM. Space heat loss is estimated at 18 MBH and space design
temperature is 70˚F. The temperature of the primary air flow is 60˚F.

1. Space heat loss (18 MBH) = 5.2 kWh

2. heat required to raise the temperature of primary air:

kWh = 600 x 10 = 1.90kWh

3160
1. Locate the room heat loss on the MBH scale on the far left side of the chart.
Convert to kWh by moving horizontally to the right to the kWh scale 3. Total heat required = 5.2 + 1.90 = 7.1 kWh
(1kWh = 3.413 MBH) 4. Referring to chart, air temperature rise ATR = 35˚F
2. Calculate the kWh required to heat the primary air to room temperature 5. Leaving air temperature = 60˚F + 35˚F = 95˚F. since the leaving air
using the following equation, temperature is less than the recommended maximum limit of 120˚F,
the selection is satisfactory
kWh = CFM x ∆T 6. Select a suitable power supply from the reheat coil selection table
3160 7. Verify minimum airflow requirement are met. (minimum 70 CFM/kW)
3. Add the kWh value obtained in the step 2 to the kWh scale at the let
side. More horizontally to the right to the point where the kWh value
600 CFM = 85 CFM/kW
and the air flow volume intersect. 7.1 kW

During this mode, 2 or 3 stages reheat control the heater output by using 2 or 3 stages of heater control at different intervals. The heaters cut-in at different
stages depending on the heating set-point of reheat.

When the room temperature is above the cooling set point, the flow shall be maximum and when the room temperature fall below cooling set point (by more than
1 degree Celsius), the flow will be minimum.

When the room temperature fall beyond heating set point, the control should automatically increase to auxiliary flow (which is resettable) when the 1st stage of
heater cut in. when the room temperature continues to fall, the 2nd heater and 3rd heater will cut in accordingly. The interval for each stage of reheat to cut in is
determined by the room temperature and heating set point.

During this mode, reheat coils or hot water coil are controlled with modulating output from controller.

When the room temperature is above the cooling set point, the flow shall be maximum and when the room temperature fall below cooling set point (by more than
1 degree Celsius), the flow will be minimum.

When the room temperature fall beyond heating set point, the air flow should automatically be increased to reheat flow (which is resettable). At the same time,
the peripheral output will gradually increase the valve position to increase the hot water volume. Hence the supply air temperature rises.

■ VAV Controller Control Mode (Cooling With Series Fan And Reheat)
At this mode, the fan is intended to run continuously when the main air handler is on AIR FLOW

VAV TERMINAL UNITS

STR Circular VAV Terminal Units

■ Introduction
ASLI Circular Variable Air Volume (STR) terminal units are volume flow rate
controller for supply air on variable air volume system. These units are designed
to control the airflow rate of conditioned air into an occupied space in response to
a control signal from thermostat or Building Automation System (BAS). They
could be used in stand alone system or interfaced with LONWORKS.

ASLI RVAV terminal units also incorporate control components, (VAV controller
actuator, and transformer) which are factory fitted. ASLI in-house testing facility
ensured that all boxes that come out from the factory are calibrated and tested to
match the controller of individual size. This allow the terminals to monitor the
desired flow rate, as dictated by the thermostat or BAS, and compensate instantly
for any changes in supply air pressure that might tend to alter the supply air
volume. Hence, the net result is a pressure independent variable air volume
system.

Two models are available, STR (basic unit) and STRC (basic unit with external
cladding to reduce case radiated noise).

General notes:
•Galvanized steel housing
•Mechanically seal leak resistant construction
•Right hand control location standard, as shown above
•Turbulence flow approaching the terminal will create additional noise, pressure drop and greater air flow variation. It is therefore recommended for optimum
performance, there should be a minimum of 4 duct diameters of straight duct, same size as inlet, between the inlet and any transition, take off or lifting.

VVD VAV Diffusers

Introduction
ASLI VAV diffusers, VVD are variable air volume diffuser for supply air in variable air volume system. In many conventional HVAC systems, multiple work spaces
are controlled by a single thermostat. Complaints from occupants who are too hot or too cold are common as the occupants attempt to adjust the thermostat to
their level of comfort.

VVD enhances conventional system design by adding the element of personal control. A room thermostat provides constant feedback to the VVD, enabling
precise control of the space temperature by controlling the supply air volume into the room.

The actuator mechanism features high torque, low voltage motor which offers immediate response, superior to the sluggish response and delayed action
common to thermally activated expansion device.

ASLI VAV Diffuser Vs Conventional VAV System

Conventional VAV System

• Large zone controlled by one thermostat.

• Zones with varying load characteristics.
• Individual zone control is not available.
• Zone with thermostat determines supply air volume to all zones.
• Overcooling or overheating may occur in zones without thermostat.

System with ASLI VAV diffuser

• Each zone is controlled by one thermostat

• Individual zone control is available
• Modular design allows relocation as needs change
• Pressure relief damper releases the pressure in the main duct when pressure builds up.

Operation
ASLI VAV diffusers, VVD maintain space temperature by varying the air volume delivered to the space. The amount of air delivered will depend on the room
temperature and temperature set point. As the air volume is decreased by the control disc, the air velocity increased, thereby maintaining the longest throw and
best entrainment. This insures superior air distribution at all damper positions. Supply air is discharged horizontally in a uniform 4-way pattern while the variable
geometry design ensures that adequate room air movement is maintained throughout the full range of volume variation.

Individual comfort control

Comfort level of each zone is controlled with their own thermostat. In addition to providing individual comfort control, having individual sensors in each zone will
allow each VAV diffuser to react to variations in the zone. For example, if there is no occupant (no heat load) in the zone, the diffuser will sense the lower zone
temperature and adjust the control disc to reduce the supply air to the zone. Having individual zone control and temperature sensing allows the control disc to
react faster to load changes in the zone eliminating over-and under-cooling of the zone.

Energy Savings
When the duct static pressure increase as VAV diffuser closes the control disc, the by-pass damper, volume control damper or variable speed drive of fan
(depending on the system) will regulate the static pressure in the main duct. This is to ensure there is no excess static pressure in the main duct. Excess static
pressure in the main duct is literally equivalent to excess energy used. When the return air temperature decreased (due to by-pass supply air), the control valve
will close to reduce the chill water supply into the air handling unit. As the chill water supply pressure increased when the control valves close, the chill water
by-pass valve will open to by-pass the chill water back to the chillers. Energy savings can be achieved without compromising the occupants comfort level by a
series of operations in the air conditioning system.

Applications
ASLI VAV diffusers can be used to address challenging areas such as areas with varying load requirements like conference room and individual offices. In a
system with more than 30% of VAV diffuser, pressure control will need to be used.

VVD VAV Diffusers System Designs

System Balancing
During commissioning, balancing dampers are used to set the desired flow through each branch duct/diffuser. Typically, balancing dampers near the fan are
adjusted to provide a high resistance to the airflow, in order to reduce excess duct static pressure. Conversely, balancing dampers far from the fan are adjusted
nearly open to provide low resistance to airflow, where duct static pressure is low. Please do not rely upon VVD to take the place of a required balancing damper.

Balancing the VVD system is simple. First, drive open all VVD diffusers by adjusting the thermostat set point to the lowest temperature possible. If using bypass
pressure control, close all bypass terminal dampers before balancing. If using volume control damper pressure control, open all volume control dampers. Next,
select a diffuser that requires highest pressure to satisfy its design flow and measure its air flow rate of this diffuser. If it is too high, reduce the system duct
static pressure. If it is too low, increase the system duct static pressure. The system is now effectively balanced since remaining diffusers require less pressure
will drive as far open as needed to satisfy individual flow rates. If the system is constant volume, a bypass pressure control damper is required. The bypass
damper should be sized to bypass up to 70% of the system air volume with a maximum face velocity of 5m/s. This assumes a minimum of 30% air flow for the
diffusers.

Static Pressure Control

Static pressure control should be taken care of when using ASLI VVD diffusers. Static pressure greater than the recommended pressure may result in excessive
air flow and increased noise level. The duct static pressure will increase as the VVD begin to close towards minimum flow with room load variations. Therefore
pressure control is a must in systems where 30% or more of the total fan air flow rate is being delivered through VVD diffusers.

1. Volume Control Damper (Figure 1, 2)

Volume control damper is installed at upstream of VVD diffusers. The volume control damper regulates duct static pressure based on a pressure sensor set
point located near the end of the longest duct run.

2. By-Pass Damper (Figure 3)

By-pass damper is installed at upstream of VVD diffusers. The by-pass damper regulates duct static pressure based on a pressure sensor set point located
near the end of the longest duct run. The by-pass damper can discharge the air flow directly to the ceiling plenum or be ducted to the fan return.

3. Fan Speed Control (Figure 4)

Fan speed control can be achieved by using a variable speed drive to regulate the fan air volume based on duct static pressure.

■ Introduction
ASLI Bypass Terminal Unit, model ST6000 is a single duct variable air volume
pressure dependent air terminal unit, designed for use with constant volume low
and medium pressure packaged air handling systems or roof top air conditioning
units. ST6000 handles a constant supply of primary air through its inlet and
bypass the excess air through the pressure relief damper into the plenum return
when the pressure in the terminal unit increases. The supply air volume is
controlled by damper blade which responds to the room thermostat in the
occupied space to meet the cooling load

■ Operation of Bypass VAV Box
The supply air volume is controlled by damper blade
which responds to the room thermostat in the
occupied space to meet the cooling load. When the
damper blade closes and the pressure in the
terminal unit increases, the excess air will be
bypassed through the pressure relief damper into
plenum return.

A field adjustable counterweight is provided for the

pressure relief damper to control the pressure
resistance to the bypass air. A manual balancing
damper at the inlet of the terminal unit is field
adjusted to control the primary air volume.
