CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

8

INTRODUCTION

Family is the smallest unit in society. It is basically consist of father, mother, and

child/children. People have many ways of defining a family and what being a part of a

family means to them. As defined by Random House Western Dictionary, a family is “any

group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins”.

Some teenagers can define a family as their best friend, teacher, classmate and people who

will always be there for them. But some other teenagers defined it as their enemy, problem,

heartache and most hated people in their life because of being into a broken family.

A broken family is defined as a family in which the parents are separated or divorced.

Broken homes can cause children to question their self-worth, to experience unnecessary

grief, guilt and confusion. It can affect their whole life, especially in their studies and in their

emotions. Being into a broken family gives a lot of effects in a teenager. The one who should

support and be there for them are the one who hurts their feeling. This leads to children being

raised by single parents, stepparents or others not related to the biological parents.

The study is primarily focused on the impacts of broken family among the students. In

this study, the Researchers will focus on the behavior of the students in school and how it

affected their lives. The Researchers will be stating facts and other information about the

students into a broken family. (Christe, 2009)

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The family can therefore, be looked at as a social group characterized by common

resident, economic, cooperation and production. When a child is born, the family is the first
9

primary group with which they come into contact. As the child enters schools, he/she will

start showing different attitudes and expectations.

A stable home is one in which both parent (mother and father) lives together with

their children, while a broken home is the one in which one or both of the parents are not

living together with the children. Broken homes been it unstable can influence the

achievement of a student’s academically. Also, children that have suffered from neglect or

lack of love (in broken homes) are known to be psychologically imbalanced to face the

realities of life.

Broken family is a family in which the parents are separated or divorced or are no

more together as a result of death. In assessing the definition such as a situation (broken

home can result to poor academic achievement in student as once the child misses such

opportunity of guide, securities affection and assistant where necessary).

Home and the Childs’ family provide the best and first education since the child serve

as teachers. The parent laid the foundation for the desired social, moral, emotional spiritual

and intellectual well-being of the child.

This is so, because children are born with some psychological, emotional and

intellectual needs such as need for love and security, the need for new experience, the need

for praise and recognition and need for responsibility.

It is relevant at this juncture to point out in spite of all the needs expressed as to be

met by the students most especially secondary school students, this research also has intended

to seek for how much secondary school student is affected in academic achievement, either as

a result of his home been stable or broken.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research seeks to fill reasons and results to the vacuum of contracture by

examining the following probabilities below:

10

1. What is the Demographic profile of the respondents in terms of the ff:

1.1 Gender

1.2 Age

1.3 Civil Status

1.4 Social Status

2. In what particular performance academically does having a broken family affects?

3. What are the factors why there are broken family?

4. What are the solutions to prevent having a broken family?

occurs and what happened to their parents after the separation. In short, this research focused

to their child’s study habits after experiencing of having a broken family.

A broken family is a family that has split or separated due to a variety of reasons. This

leads to children being raised by single parents, stepparents or others not related to the

biological parents.

This research aims to find out the different effects of having a broken family in

academic performance of the students of MCA.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

13

This chapter is divided into the review of related literature and studies, theoretical

framework, and definition of terms.

RELATED LITERATURE

This part is based on the studies made from books, articles and other reading or

printed resources involving to explain the research.

FOREIGN. The concept of effects of having a broken family. According to Glenn

(2010) broken family varies from numerous reasons why it had to be that way. But usually,

misunderstanding starts from simple domestic quarrel that grows impertinently damaging the

long-forged relationship between the family members. When a couple split up, it is the

children that are greatly affected scarring them physically, emotionally and socially.

According to Marla (2014) says broken family students failed to handle the

curriculum. This failure includes various aspects of educational failure such as rebellion,

frequent absence from classes, dropping out and many more. Studies have shown that people

shown that people with academic failure are more probable to rebel and use drugs at older

ages; therefore, academic failure and dropout might result to rebellion, drug, and alcohol

addictions.

Living in broken family is difficult because there’s a need of love, care, and

fulfillment of the duty of both parents. If the role of each parent is broken it will damage and

have a great impact to the student, on how will the student live with it. If one of the parents

will left due of miss understanding circumstances and will lead to divorce households and

responsibilities there is an effect to the relationship to other member of family. If that’s the

case, it will depend to the children and parent who take care of the child if managing a

households and responsibilities will reflect positive or negative outcomes in their situation.
14

LOCAL. According to Sonkushre (2011), states that the economy in the Philippines is not

stable thus affecting the income of the people especially those parents who serves as the

breadwinner of the family. John Thyden said that in most cases, money is not the only thing

that trip couples apart. It is primarily because of their differences in their spending habits as

well as their lack of communication. According to Olver (2013) explains that, if their partner

cheated on them, they would end the relationship. Although, not every couple felt this way,

some indicated the willingness to work through infidelity.

In the report of Tubeza (2010), these trials being encountered by married couples

caused the number of marriage annulment cases in the Philippines to rise by 40 percent in the

last decade. According to Cayabyab (2013) states that the demand of the couples for

annulment is not changing despite it being so costly.

According to Gabriela, a national alliance of women in the Philippines, there are 294

cases of violence against women and the 204 involves domestic violence, in the first four

months of the year 2011. According to Festin (2011), although this is an alarming figure,

most women opt to suffer in silence to “keep the family together” and to avoid the stigma of a

broken marriage.

According to Tantaoco (2013), when marriages break, couples go separate ways and

the ones that are affected the most are the children. Divorce clearly increases the risk that

children will suffer from psychological and behavioral problems.

RELATED STUDIES
15

This chapter is a presentation of the review of related and studies the researchers after

conducting reading and research were able to gather and present ideas, literature and studies

to the present problem. This study is one way of another would give to us further insights

about this research.

FOREIGN. Poor academic performance is understood as falling below an expected standard.

According to Aremu and Sokan (2009) submit that poor academic achievement is related to

low motivational orientation, low self-esteem, emotional problems, poor study habits and

poor interpersonal relationships. This chapter focuses on broken marriage as being a factor

that affects negatively the academic performance of primary school students

Past studies have shown that children and adolescents who are exposed to high level

of parental conflict had more problems in academic compared with children and adolescents

who had not experienced parental conflict. These children and adolescents have two to three

times more tendencies to drop out from school.

According to Amato and Keith children from divorced families scored significantly

lower in a variety of outcomes including academic achievement. The number of people

touched by divorce increased, school-based programs for children divorced families became

common, and education courses for divorcing parents became mandatory in many states.

LOCAL. It is very usual for people to think that teenagers doing such nasty acts are rooted to

family disorientation. Even countless studies show that child’s mislead life is blamed to

separated parents. According to Eschica (2010), children with separated parents do not

perform well in school which is a very terrifying incident because a school that is an

institution for learning is failing to deliver education. Thus, it merely becomes unproductive.
16

According to Tubeza (2011) The number of marriage annulment cases in the

Philippines has risen by 40 percent in the last decade with at least 22 cases filed every day,

according to a report by the Catholic bishops’ news agency and with the rise of such cases

relating to separated parents, effects that deemed students into becoming prone to challenges

upon their emotional, mental and psychological stability causes them to be much more

exposed to the world they are not yet ready to venture in. Discussion about the issue

demonstrates that there are many factors besides parental separation which have an impact on

children’s adjustment and proved to be a significant difficulty for most children suggests that

the relation between these variables and reaction is very complex and not well defined or

understood.
17

PARADIGM OF THE STUDY

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

This chapter represents the methodology of research and procedures used in gathering

information for the study. It includes the research method, methods of the study, survey

method, sources of data, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data.

RESEARCH METHOD

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the research design of the

study. Choosing a design for a study basically involves selecting the most appropriate

methods or techniques to solve the particular problem under investigation. Anderson explains

that research design is a crucial step in the thesis because if a wrong decision is made, the

whole study may be criticized on the grounds of inappropriate design or even worse as being

unscientific of illogical approach.

METHODS OF THE STUDY

20

The basic purpose of this study was to find out the effect of broken family to

secondary student’s academic performance in Maranatha Christian Academy of Caloocan.

In order to achieve these objectives an appropriate method was identified. By a deep

study on researchers the investigator reached on a conclusion that descriptive

interrelationship method was best suited to the study. Descriptive inter-relationship method

includes presentation of current condition concerning the nature of group of member, number

of objects or class of events. In present study the researcher finds out the relationship between

one independent variable i.e.

SURVEY METHOD

This study used the quantitative approach to allow the reporting of summary results in

numerical terms across many repetitions of answers.

SOURCES OF DATA

Twenty (20) high school students of Maranatha Christian Academy were given a

chance to answer the questionnaire given by the researcher; twenty copies of questionnaire

are given to the respondent.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

21

The researcher conducted a survey for twenty high school students of Maranatha

Christian Academy to know their opinion about the effect of broken family to student’s

academic performance.

In order to support the validity of the data, interview was conducted to gather

information.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

A combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques was used in the study. The

data that gathered by the researcher through observation and interview on respondents and

research were tabulated, tallied, and treated statistically in order to ensure reliability and for

the interpretation and presentation.

The researchers treated all data through the use of the following statistical method:

1. Percentage distribution to summarize and tabulate the data.

Percentage distribution summary is the itemized summation of the percentage of the

frequency of response for each question to the total number of response.

Formula:

P = (f)/N x 100

Where:

P – Percentage N – Total number of respondent

F – Frequency of response
