Instructions: All questions are compulsory. Answer all the question in ascending order. Symbols have
their usual meaning.

1. Find a basis for the vector space spanned by the vectors (1, 2, 1), (3, 1, 5) and (3, −4, 7).

2. Find all the solution(s) of the following system using Gauss-Elimination method

3x1 + 2x2 − 4x3 − 3x4 − 9x5 = 3

x1 + x2 − 2x3 + x4 + 3x5 = 1
2x1 − x2 + 2x3 + 2x4 + 6x5 = 2,

if the system is consistent.

7. Solve: y00 − 4y0 + 5y = 0 , y(0) = 2 , y0 (0) = −2.

8. Given that x2 is a solution of x2 y00 − 3xy0 + 4y = 0, x > 0, find its general solution using method of
reduction of order.
