CASE STUDY 2

INDIA INTERNATIONAL CENTRE

SITE PLAN

INTRODUCTION

- The 1onven international centre is designed to provide a setting for thescholarly


activities, conferences andsymposium organized by the national and inter national groups.
- Its design is notable for its simple layout of building, garden and water, enriched
materially by 1onve adaptation of traditional north india 1onv and the inclusive use of local
building material.
- The center promotes culture exchange among varios different group ofpeople.

LOCATION
- The iic is located in the lodhi estate,new delhi along the max muller marg, the centre is
adjacent to the lodi gardens overlooking a hugelandscape of gardens and historic monuments
from the sixteenth cent.

ARCHITECT: Joseph Allen Stein.


SITE AREA : 18,600SQ.MT (4.6 ACRES)

SITE SURROUNDING
- The IIC is located in the lodhi estate,New Delhi along the Max Muller Marg,
- The centre is adjacent to the Lodi gardens overlooking a hugelandscape of gardens and
historic monumens from the sixteenth cent.

DESIGN CONCEPT
The main building consists of two wings, the hostel and programmed winds. A service entrance
is provide on thesouthern side where parking where parking for complex are located. The
campus is designed in such a way that it is possible to enter any section of the building, with out
disturbing activities in the other section, yet entry is past central control points.The placing of
built mass is such that it divides the open spaces into:
• The entrance: 3 main avenues, 1 south and 2 east
• The garden: water bodies giving view to complex
• Courtyard: parking area covered with vaulted roof
• The surrounding north wing of services and the west wing of the guest –rooms have been
raised up on piers, bringing the lodi tombs into framed view and creating a large verandah
beneath.
• The first, or entrance court, provides access on the north side to the guest room.
• On the south to the auditorium and programmed block of library and offices .
• Passing through the portico ,the visitor enters into the main courtyard and then into the
gardens of the ,
which the rear and the north of the sides of the site.
• The guest–room wing has also been given a curved form which approaches and then
recedes away from the lodi gardens site boundary.

- IIC has been designed as ‘triveni’, which in 2onvenie means convergence. From the
entrance driveway, a grand
central extends across a north-south axis.
- The west wing is constituted by a lounge & a dining room. Also, a bar facility is
available. One may stop at the
south wing in order to spend some time at this one of a kind library housing about 37,000
volumes on varied
subjects such as social sciences, history, biography, literature & the arts. Also, the
auditoriums, publication
division & all the administrative offices lie here.
- In the north wing lies the residential area with its hostel rooms being in great demand.
The hostel includes 48
single rooms, 25 double rooms & two fellows’ flats. Most residential rooms at the main
complex open directly to
the lawns or the lily pond on gf, and are provided with private verandahs on the 1st & 2nd
floors. The residential & catering services are open to the members & their guests.

SITE SKETCH

PROGRAM BLOCK (SOUTH BLOCK):


PROGRAM WING:
- It is the nucleus of the complex and comprises of auditorium, library, reception lobby,
laundry, a.c plant room, exhibition space on first floor, on second floor having conference room
of 50, main kitchen & and administration offices on first floor and second floor are all
administration office.

Staff facilities:
The newly developed basement floor consists of the different facilitiesfor staff like gym, café
etc.The ground floor of this consists of washroom which are accessible by people using the lawn
area during the programs.A lounge is provided for the staff workers on the first floor of the
recently constructed part of the building.

CONFERENCE ROOM-I
Rectangular shaped room with long glass top table. Sitting 50 around the table +
30 extra chairs at the back row. Room is oriented north south to suit the climatic condition
and is equipped with a/vfacilities. Chalk board & declamation board are provided for lecture for
lectures & reading papers. Acoustical treatment has been given surface.

SECOND FLOOR-
Accounts section, publications, computer wing, record room, programme office.

AUDITORIUM:
An auditorium of hexagonal shaped covering an area of 315 sqm is provided near the library.

STAGE of auditorium is 35m2.

Capacity- 240 located next to reception lobby


It is hexagonal in shape
made of grey colored quartzite

Stage: Stage is small and mainly use for lecture and


conferences.
Projection facilities: mainly for stage drama.
Setting in form of 12 semicircular rows and
approached by two aisles.

Walls: Acoustically traced by wooden

- uniform sound distribution.
- Carpet: wall to wall carpet for sound
absorption, projection room is at rear Wall.

AUDITORIUM ROOF DOME :-
The roof of the auditorium is composed of pre cast y shaped elements , combined to form a six
sided domical surface baseon hexagons and quadrilateral. The lateral load from the roof is
contained by a tension ring. Short spaces projecting above the y-shaped pieces carry the
outer roofing layer and provide space for distribution of lighting and air conditioning.

LIBRARY:
-72’x36’ . library is in the south wing.
-The library has 6 cubicles2mx2m.
-Photocopying facilities are available on payment.
The library is automated and networked in order
to provide efficient reference service to its
members who specialize in various disciplines.

RESTAURANT:
• In the ground floor of program block
• Hexagonal in shape
• Glazed wall in all sides
• Capacity – 40 seats
• Adjustable louvers on all glazed walls
• Kitchen
• Located in the connecting portion
between the main block and restaurant

• Area – 168sq.m

RESIDENTIAL BLOCK
(NORTH BLOCK):

• It consists of a lounge ,reception


and accommodation facilities of 76 guests
(single and double room, president suite) at
all floor giving spectacular views of lodhi
garden. The main entrance to the wing is
from southern side by vaulted corridor
connecting programme block.

GUEST ROOM:
- Two types of room both single and double are provided.
- The centrally located entrance lobby divided hostel into two wings east wings and west
wings.
- Lift and staircase linked to upper floor.
- East wing single seated room followed by double loaded corridor on ground and first
floor.
- West wing raised on stilts, double seated room on first & second floor.
- The hostel wings linked with coffee & bar at ground floor by means of patio.
- The hostel blocked is connected to dining’s at first floor
- The corridors are covered by vertical 6onv to which isattached film & food construction
all flowing light into the corridor.

CONFERENCE BLOCK:
It is situated at the other end of the site having its separate entrance and parking.
Upper basement:
It has member facilities room( director’s room, booking office, lounge) of area 7596sq.ft

LOWER BASEMENT: store area 6800 sq.ft

GROUND FLOOR :
consists of entrance lobby, reception and a multipurpose hall of 3630sq.ftFor 300 people. For
services each floor is having two staircase and a lift. Area-7682sq.ft

FIRST FLOOR

620sq.ft and 945 sq.ft and pre function areas.

SECOND FLOOR: art gallery-1380sq.ft

ART GALLERY:
The art gallery in the basement holds exhibitions of photographs, crafts,
paintings, puppets, etc.

The exhibitions held in the gallery could be of individual artists or


arranged in collaboration with india international centre .

CONNECTIVITY:
• The main complex of the centre is laid out with three wings, north, south and west, each
designed to serve a separate function.
• Library ,auditorium and administrative offices in south wing.
• The centre offers residential and catering facilities to members and their guests in the
north wing.
• The lounge, dining hall and services are located on the west side, overlooking the lodhi
gardens.
• All wings are connected to each other by walkways with overhanging.

LANDSCAPING:
• The site has been well landscaped.
• There has been a play of water body which creates a dramatic effect. Small water pool
has been provided at the
entrance.
• Interrelated interior and shaded space courtyards and gardens.
• Each courtyard and garden at the iic has a difference function and aspect.

STRUCTURE AND MATERIALS:


• Concrete is used as a basic structural material:
• Pre-cast concrete roof and floor elements which vary with each space and function –
auditorium, ounge, dining, hostel block, programmed block- each having its distinctive and
appropriate pre-cast coffered roof and floor elements
• Locally available stones are used for constructing walls
• Flooring is done using locally available quartzite stone and blue kotah stone
• In addition to this numerous sun portion elements in the design of the iic was the use of
\courts and openings through the buildings to create a lively sequence of visual experiences

from approach to entry to exit.

SERVICES:
Electrical services:
Generator – 2 nos, 75 kv amp
Transformer located near a/c plant room.
Electric supply of11kv stepped by transformer to 230kv.
Water supply :-
Water supply is from municipal lines water stored in the sumps.
Over head tank capacity – 1,25,000 liters stored in two overhead tanks.
Sump tank capacity – 125000 liters.
Drainage:
Waste from toilet (drainage)into the municipal drainage pipe.
Kitchen waste also flow into the municipal line.
AIR CONDITIONING:
Centralized air conditioned with the a/c plant being located at
the western end of the program block from where the ducts are
carried to this block and hostel block
• A/c capacity- 3 a/c plants of 200 t capacity each, one being a
standby.
• Plant room area – 235sq.m

ENVIRNMENT FACTORS UNDER CONSIDERATION:


• Traffic congestion reduction: proper control of traffic system has been adopted to avoid
over congestion.
• less energy consumption : various techniques like water body and landscaping, brick
9onv, and locally available material etc. Have been used.
• Reduction in air pollution: eco friendly material and techniques have been provided.
• Optimum utilization of prevailing land use: maximum area is used for landscaping.
• Quick service and safety: all areas are easily accessible, and are well connected through
covered walkways
• No obstruction towards the visual impacts: dinning hall provides a good view of lodhi
garden and most rooms at the main complex open directly open to the lawns or the lily pond.

NATIONAL SCHOOL OF DRAMA

SITE PLAN

INTRODUCTION:

- This foundation of this building as a 1937 by nawabal haj sir sadiq 10onvenie khan
abbasir, nawab of bhawalpur state.” At present, the building houses the “nationalscool of
drama” established 1958.
- Kathak 10onven (national training centre of kathak) established in 1964. The offices of
the cultural public works department. “the foundation stone of this building was laid on
the 5th of march 1937”.

SITE AREA: 5.5 ACRES

BUILDING TYPE: Academy of Drama, music


and Dance.

USERS: Staff, Students, visitors and artists.No of visitors: 500-600 per day

LOCATION AND ACCESS:


- The national school of drama is situated at the bhagwandas road near mandi house, which
is the cultural core of new delhi.
- Acess to the building is from three different sidesbhagwandas road, sikandra road, and
bhagwan das lane but the only the bhagwan das serves as an entrance to the site.
- AIRPORT- Indra Gandhi International airportis 2 km from National School of Drama.
- RAILWAY STATION: Ajmeri gate railway station is 3.6 km from National School of
Drama.

VIEWS

CONCEPT OF PLANNING:
- The building was not originally designed for the purpose it is serving now.
- It is a government building originally.
- The site has two center’s of arts, kathak 11onven and national school of drama.
- The national school of drama has a scattered plan form, where various function are
locatedindividually & are linked through semi covered pathways.
- Most of the building block are later addition.

CIRCULATION
- The circulation is mainly horizontal.
- The different areas are connected with the help of open corridors with temporary roof
structures.
- There are two staircases leading to different areas on the first floor.

ZONING
- The zoning of the national school of drama has been done in a very haphazard way. This
is so because the constructions of the other blocks have been done as when the need arose and
was not pre planned.
- The interlinking spaces are the courts formed due to these constructions.
- The blocks are linked with the help of corridors with temporary roofs.
- The whole structure is on the ground floor except for the administration, block which is
g+1.

ABHIMANCH PLAN:
- Abhimanch is the main performance auditorium of the campus.
- Abhimanch has a central passage for easy access to all seats.

- The seating arrangement is divided
into two:
1) Upper Stall and 2) Lower Stall.

UPPER STALL
- It is 7.1 meters in depth and 13.2 meters in width.
- The seating capacity is 102.
- 1.6 meter passage is provided for circulation.

LOWER STALL
- It is 13 meters in depth and 13.2 meters in width.
- The seating capacity is 208.
- 1.6 meter passage is provided.

EXITS: Four (2m wide) exits are provided to the auditorium.


- 2 for the Upper stall and two for the lower stall.

STAGE:
- The stage is 12.09 meters deep and 10.8 meters wide.
- Distance between the stage and first row is 3.6 metere.
- Adjoining spaces to the stage and walls is 5.03 meters wide on both sides.

- Four ladders are provided on each of these adjoining spaces.


- The stage has three sets of stairs each with four stairs for access from the seating.

BACK STAGE
- The back stage is 9 mt. Wideand 3.6 mt in depth.
- It is divided into three parts.

GREEN ROOM
- Two green rooms are given.
- Each has an attached toilet.

MATERIALS
Stage- Wooden.
Walls- Wooden panelling.

AREAS
Built Up- 800 sq mt.
Outer corridor- 140 sqmt.
Seating- 250 sqmt
Stage- 127 sqmt.

ELEVATION
CLASSES:

- The theory classes are placed on the first floor. There are two theory class rooms for
theoretical subjects.
- The sitting are arranged like conference room.
- The size of the class room is 8m x 4m.
- There are windows on the one side of the wall for light.
- The other studios like drama studio, makeup studio, music room and theatre design etc.
Are also placed on first floor.

- It has an indoor auditorium of 300 persons capacity.

MUSIC STUDIO:
AREA: 80 SQ.M
- It is located at the periphery of the main block.

SPACE ANALYSIS:
- The administration area consisting of director’s room, area for clerical staff, conference
room and rooms for faculty. The library is also housed in the administration block. The toilets
are at the far end of this block. On the first floor lie the classrooms, the make-up room, the music
room, the set design studio and movement studio.
- The basement of this same block contains theatre in education company.
- The block is further connected to the other blockswith the help of open corridors. The

other blocks consist of the lighting studio, the costume department and costume store.
- On one side and the audio-visual department with recording.

- Fire alarm and fire hydrants provided at few critical places.
- There is no provision of sprinklers.
- An under ground water tank of capacity 40000lt for fire fighting provided in the
basements,
BUILDING MATERIAL:
- The building has typical colonial style architecture.
- The construction is r.c.c framed structure.
- Original building is in white colours later construction being in different colours.
- The windows have 17onvenien frames.
- Wooden door used for offices and classes.
