Sociology 1A - PHOTO TASK

‘Thinking Sociologically’

Photo Below; Exterior to the Bute Hall and Bell tower from the East Quadrangle, University of Glasgow, October 4th, 2019.

In this photo of the University of Glasgow’s Main Building, our group wanted to convey they
themes of social class and inequalities. Primarily, that the University as an institution, physically
manifested in a building represents the diverse range of students from the whole spectrum of
social class. Looking at the building and thinking further back to its construction we can think of
aspects of class from the past with resect to Marx’s theory of the bourgeoise and the proletariats.

With regards to the inequalities, the university stands as a pillar of representation that you do need
to be of a certain academic level to be accepted, and as a result people who have more economic
capital and who can fund their prior education (titors, additional resources, ...) may have a better
chance of getting to university.
