Energy Review Assignment

1. A squirrel (mass of approximately 1 kg) does push-ups by applying a force to elevate its body by 5 cm in order to
do a mere 0.50 J of work. If the tired squirrel does all this work in 2 seconds, then determine its power.

2. When doing pull-ups, a physics student lifts her 42.0-kg body a distance of 0.25 meters in 2 seconds. What is the
power delivered by the student's biceps? Per bicep?

3. An escalator is used to move 20 passengers every minute from the first floor of a department store to the second.
The second floor is located 5.20 meters above the first floor. The average passenger mass is 54.9 kg. Determine
the power requirement of the escalator in order to move this number of passengers in this amount of time.

4. A 1200 kg car applies the brakes and goes from 17 m/s to 3.5 m/s over a distance of 10 meters. Determine the
braking force required to slow the car by this amount.

5. A paratrooper fell 370 m after jumping from an aircraft without his parachute opening. He landed in a snowbank,
creating a crater 1.1 m deep, surviving with minor injuries. Assuming the paratrooper’s mass was 80 kg and his
terminal velocity through the air was 30 m/s, find
a. What is the work done on him by air resistance as he fell?

b. What is the force exerted on him by the air while he was falling.
