CHECKLIST FOR A GENERAL BUSINESS LICENSE APPLICATION

Irrespective of the sector or industry, a company/partnership or sole


trader is involved; it is advisable for all businesses to obtain a general
business license as regulated by the Business Licensing Act of 1972.

The following are the requirements:

 A filled application form;


 A certified passport copy and Class A Residence Permit (for
investors) for foreign national applicants;
 Curriculum Vitae;
 Certificates showing competence and qualification for the license
applied for;
 A Certified copy of Memorandum and Articles of Association for
companies;
 A Certified copy of Certificate of Incorporation for companies OR
Certificate of Registration or Extract for partnerships or sole
traders;
 A Certified copy of the company’s Tax Payer Identification
Number (TIN) Certificate;
 Proof of suitable business premises e.g. title deed, tenancy
agreement, receipts of rent, land rent receipt or property
management.
ADDITIONAL LICENSES THAT MUST BE OBTAINEDFOR THOSE
CONDUCTING TRADE OR BUSINESS IN SPECIFIC SECTORS,

 For those carrying out the business of clearing and forwarding, a Customs
agency license issued by Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

 For those carrying out tourism promotion business such as tourist hotels,
travel agents, tour operators, hunting, etc, a Tourist agency license
(TALA) issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

 For those involved in the mining business, a mining tenement issued by


the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

 For those involved in the banking business, a banking license issued by


the Bank of Tanzania (BOT).

 For those looking to engage in


telecommunications/postal/broadcasting/ Internet Service Provider, a
Telecommunications/postal/broadcasting/ license issued by the
Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

 For those wanting to operate as Insurers, an Insurance license issued by


Insurance Supervisory Department.

 For those looking to carry out business relating to food, drugs and
cosmetics, a Special license/permit issued by Tanzania Food and Drugs
Authority (TFDA).
 For those applying for a license to carry out fishing activities, a Fishing
license issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

 For those involved in petroleum excavation etc, a Petroleum exploration


license issued by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

 For those wanting to establish industries and factories for the making of
various goods, an Industrial License issued by the Ministry of Industries
and Trade.

 For those wanting to provide security services, a seal of approval and


authorization by the Chief of Police, Ministry of Home Affairs.

 Professional certificates/authorization for all professional businesses e.g.


doctors, lawyers, pilots, accountants, ship captains, etc issued by the
respective professional organization.
