ASSIGNMENT -1

1. If 3.5 m3 of oil weights 32.95 kN, calculate its specific weight, specific volume,
mass density and relative density.
2. If μ=15.14 poise, calculate kinematic viscosity in m2/sec unit. The liquid has
relative density = 0.964.
3. The kinematic viscosity and specific gravity of a certain liquid are 5.58 stokes and
2.00 respectively. Calculate the viscosity of the liquid.
4. The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. Each side of
the plate is 60 cm. The thickness of the oil film is 12.5 mm. The upper plate
moves at 2.5 m/s, requires force of 10 kg to maintain the speed. Determine: i) the
dynamic viscosity of oil in poise, and ii) the kinematic viscosity of the oil in
stokes if the specific gravity of oil is 0.95.
5. A vertical gap 2.35 cm wide of infinite extent contains oil of specific gravity 0.95
and viscosity 2.45 Ns/m2. A metal plate 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 0.15 cm weighing 50 N is
to be lifted through the gap at a constant speed of 0.1 m/s. estimate the force
required.
6. A piston of 7.9 cm diameter rotates concentrically inside a cylinder of 8 cm
diameter. Both the piston and the cylinder are 12 cm long. If the space between
the cylinder and the piston is filled with an oil having a dynamic viscosity µ=2.35
poise, calculate the torque necessary to rotate the piston at 150 rpm.

7. If the velocity distribution over a plate is given by u  y  y 2 in which u is the

velocity in m/s at a distance y metre above the plate, determine the shear stress at
y=0 and y=0.15 m. Take dynamic viscosity of fluid as 8.63 poises.
8. Two large plane surfaces are 2.4 cm apart. The space between surfaces is filled
with glycerin. What force is required to drag a very thin plate of surface area 0.5
m2 between two large plane surfaces at a speed of 0.6 m/s, if: (i) the thin plate is in
the middle of the two plane surfaces, and (ii) the thin plate is at a distance of 0.8
cm from one of the plane surface? Take the dynamic viscosity of glycerin = 8.10 x
10-1 NS/m2. (ans  45.56 N)
9. A flat plate of area 1 m2 and weight 100 N slides down a 30º inclined plane
lubricated with 1 mm uniform layer of oil of viscosity 0.1 Ns/m2. Determine the
steady state of velocity of plate. Ans (0.5 m/s)
10. A thrust bearing consists of a 10 cm diameter pad on another pad separated by an
oil film μ=8c cP, by 1.5 mm. Compute the power dissipated in the bearing if it
rotates at 100 revolutions per minute (Ans 0.0547 W)
11. Determine the torque and power required to run a 10 cm long, 5 cm diameter shaft
at 500 revolutions per minute in a 5.1 cm diameter concentric bearing flooded
with a lubrication oil of viscosity 100 centipoise. (Ans 5.387W)
12. A conical thrust bearing idealized as a cone of semi-angle 30º, maximum cone
diameter 20 cm rests and revolves over a uniform fluid layer of thickness 0.1 cm
at 600 rpm. If the fluid has a viscosity of 1 poise, calculate the rate of heat
dissipated in the bearing. ( Ans 4 3 W )
13. If the surface tension of water in contact with air is 0.075 N/m, what correction
need to be applied towards capillary rise in the manometric reading in tubes of 3
mm diameter?

14. Find out the minimum size of glass tube that can be used to measure water level if
the capillary rise in the tube is to be restricted to 2 mm. Consider surface tension
of water in contact with air as 0.073575 N/m. ( 15 mm - Ans )
15. What is the bulk modulus of elasticity of a liquid which is compressed in a
cylinder from a volume of 0.0125 m3 at 80 N/cm2 pressure to a volume of 0.0124

16. Determine the increase in pressure needed to cause 0.1% reduction in the volume
of water, air and mercury. Take modulus of elasticity of water and mercury as

17. The pressure outside the droplet of water of diameter 0.04 mm is 101.24 kN/m 2
(atmospheric pressure). Calculate the pressure within the droplet if surface tension
is given as 0.0711 N/m of water. (108.35 kN/m2-Ans)
19. A clean tube of internal diameter 3 mm is immersed in a liquid with a co-efficient
of surface tension = 0.48 N/m. the angle of contact of the liquid with the glass can
be assumed to be 130º. The density of the liquid is 13600 kg/m3. What would be
the level of the liquid in the tube relative to the free surface of the liquid outside
the tube? ANS  3.08 mm (depression)
20. Calculate the gauge pressure and the absolute pressure within:
(a) droplet of water 4 mm in diameter, and
(b) jet of water 4 mm in diameter
Assume the surface tension of water as 0.073 N/m and the atmospheric pressure as
101.3 kN/m2.
21. Determine the absolute pressure and the gauge pressure that would exist within:
[i]. A spherical droplet of water 5 mm in diameter.
[ii].A jet of water 5 mm in diameter.
Surface tension of water at the prevalent temperature is 0.0736 N/m and the
barometric reading stands at 750 mm of mercury. Take specific gravity of mercury
as 13.6 and specific weight of water as 9.81 kN/m3.
