1.What is motor bike c.c.?

cubic/centimeter

2 :: How the priming is done in a centrifugal pumps?

As centrifugal pump is not a self priming pump, separate priming arrangement is
required...generally, a separate axial pump is provided for this purpose. The
discharge v/v of the centrifugal pump is closed, and the inlet v/v is opened. The
discharge v/v is opened only after the pump is primed, that is filled with the liquid
to be pumped.

3 :: What is the different between gate valve and globe valve?

Gate valve is non regulator means full close or full open positions only, while
globe valve is regulator.

4 :: What is the purpose of o-ring, wearings in the centrifugal pumps?

Oring
: to prevent leakage between metal parts while allowing some movement
between them wear ring : generally a softer material than the parent material ,
employed to wear out quickly than the parent metal thereby avoiding loss of
parent metal.

5 :: what is the difference between Mitsui MAN b&w and Hitachi MAN
b&w engines?
Design and system wise absolutely no difference. Only the license manfacturer is
different. mitsui and Hitachi kawasaki Diawoo are the different license holders for
Man B&W for making the engines.
6 :: How will we know, without opening anything, that an engine is 2S
or 4S?
by the arrangement of the valves ...in two stroke exhaust valve is situated at the
top(i.e cylinder head) and there are scavenge ports at the bottom in modern
diesel engine...whereas in four stoke the exhaust and inlet is situated at the
cylinder head.

7 :: What is the meaning of code number which is given on bearing?

bearing number ia 6205z:
6 stands for the type of bearing , ie, deep groove ball bearing
2 standa for the the OD and width (thickness) of the bearing
05 stands for the ID of the bearing ie, 05 x 4= 20 mm bore;

8:: In ship cranes, there is a provision of providing a conveyor for the

cable. There is no provision of slip ring. How is it possible?
There r Slip ring arrangement in cranes onboard ships. The slip rings are present
within the crane which is not seen from outside. the power lines pass throough
the centre of the crane through slip rings. The power line u see out side is only for
grab which comes through the torsion clutch. If there is no slip ring arrangement
the crane cannot turn 360 degrees.

9.what does 7L67GFCA stands forin a marine engine MITSUI B&W

7L67GFCA?
7L67GFCA means that the engine have seven in-line units (cylinder)
with 67 centimeter of iner diameter, water cooled and supercharged cross
head engine.
10.what is high temperature corrosion and what is center priming?
When material exposed to high temperature atmospehic situation like high level
of
Of oxygen presence, sulfer presence and different type chemical presence cause
Material worsening. this type of material corrosion is known as high temperature
Corrosion.

11. what is specific fuel consumption and how fuel calculate?

Generally its 1/25 refer to the fuel consumption rate, there are several deferent
way
To calculate the specific fuel consumption ,such as volumetric method and flow
Methods can be taken only n lab. No possible do it on the sea.

12) What do you understand by the pumps and what purpose they
serve? Name different types pumps that are used on board ship.
Explain the working of each pump in brief.
Ans )There are mainly four types of pumps that are used in the shipping industry.
Centrifugal Pump, reciprocating pump, screw pump and gear pump. Centrifugal
pumps are mainly used in the lubrication pumps, like main engine pump. On the
other hand centrifugal pumps are always used in the areas where there is a
demand of high flow like ballast pumps etc. Reciprocating pumps are used as
stripping pumps, and come handy when tanks cleaning process are going one
because they can develop more power.

13.What do you know or understand by the term refrigeration. Define

the same. Also explain the basic arrangement involved in this process
and basic cycle of refrigeration involved.
The process of keeping an item below room temperature by storing the item in a
system or substance designed to cool or freeze. The most common form of
refrigeration is provided by systems (i.e.refrigerators) that use a refrigerant
chemical to remove heat from items stored inside the system.

14)Explain the difference between two stroke engines and four stroke
engines with the help of cycle?
In two strokes, there is one power stroke for two strokes and crankshaft takes
only one revolutions. But in four stroke engine, one power stroke is responsible
for causing 4 strokes and the crankshaft turns by two revolution

15) Explain the cycle of working of diesel engine and petrol engines.
The petrol engine cycle is called as Otto Cycle and operates on constant volume
and on other diesel cycle operates on Constant pressure. But generally our engine
operates on the dual cycles.

16.What is the unit of specific fuel consumption and define the same?
Thrust specific fuel consumption (TSFC) or sometimes simplyspecific fuel
consumption, SFC, is an engineering term that is used to describe the fuel
efficiency of an engine design with respect to thrust output. TSFC may also be
thought of as fuel consumption(grams/second) per unit of thrust (kilonewtons, or
kN).

17. What is the meaning of Indicated Horse power and Brake horse
power, and difference between the two?
Ans- Indicated Horse Power (IHP) is defined as the theoretical value of power
available at the shaft.
Brake Horse power (BHP) is defined as the practical value of power available at
the shaft
18. What is refrigeration and air conditioning?
Ans- Refrigeration is a process in which the temperature of a space or its contents
is
reduced to below that of their surroundings.
Air conditioning is defined as the process of conditioning of air as per human
comfort.

19.Define, Enthalpy and Entropy?

Ans- Enthalpy for a thermodynamic system represents how much is the total
energy
present in the system. Sometimes Enthalpy is also considered as a heat content
present in the system and present under the constant pressure condition. The S.I
unit of enthalpy is Joules.
Entropy: It is defined as the disorder that is present in the thermodynamic
system.
Actually entropy is the heat contained in a system that cannot be used do work by
the
system.
20. What are the three modes of heat transfer?
Ans- Conduction, Convection and Radiation

21.What do you know about incinerator? What is the need of

installing a incinerator on ship?
Ans: Incinerator is like combustion machinery, which is used to burn oily rags,
galley waster (Non plastic) and waster oil from the oily water separator.
In Incinerator, these products are burned at high temperature and the left over
ash is given to the port reception facility.
22.Name different type of rudders used on the ship and what is the
difference between these.
Ans: Types of rudders are:
Balanced, Unbalanced and Semi Balanced. Difference is the area of rudder before
or after the axis of rudder stock.
23.How will you define the pitch of the propeller and how to we
calculate the same.
Ans: Pitch of the propeller can be calculated by various methods like protector
and spirit level.

24.Name different type of compressors used on board ship. How can

you relate centrifugalpump with the I.C engine.
Ans: Screw Type compressor, centrifugal type and reciprocating type.

25.Why steam traps are installed in the steam lines

Ans: Steam traps are installed in the line to remove any condensate presne tin the
line, to avoid water hammer problems. There are three types of steam traps:
Mechanical Thermostatic Thermodynamic.
