1. Introduction 2. Natural Profile of Kelani River

The Kelani River is one of the major rivers in Sri Lanka. It originates from the mountain Adam’s Peak It is difficult to establish the natural profile of the river due to the unavailability of river data before

river profile has a steep slope up to Glencourse (Avissawella) which is located about 54km upstream
of the sea outfall. Flood plain area of the river lies below Glencourse. From Glencourse to sea
outfall there is a mild slope which is milder between Hanwella and sea outfall. Hanwella is located
about 35km upstream from the sea outfall. Below Hanwella, river section is wider and the average
width is about 110m.
