Self-Assessment

of NBPTS
Directions: For each element, rate yourself in one of the following three categories. Then provide examples of your experiences in the
area of the NBPTS. Finally, identify areas within each domain where you are interested in growing. On the last page, summarize your
strengths and areas of possible growth. Boxes will expand as needed.
• Exploring/Emerging (E/E) - a level of practice in which the teacher relies on ongoing assistance from more experienced colleagues for
support, guidance, and survival. The teacher is moving toward becoming more self-directed and independent in her/his practice.
• Applying (A) - a level of practice in which the teacher is able to provide independent instruction and easily applies what s/he has
learned about educational practice.
• Integrating/Innovating (I/I) - a level of development in which the teacher is fully skilled and confident. The Integrating/Innovating
teacher is contributing to the broader educational community through staff development, research, or publication in professional
journals.

Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their learning. E/E A I/I

2. Teachers Understand How Students Develop and Learn
3. Teachers Treat Students Equitably
4. Teachers Know Their Mission Transcends the Cognitive Development of Their Students
Three Examples of Proposition 1 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth
• At the beginning of the year, I give the parents a
short survey to help me get an idea of who they
see their child as and what their strengths and
weakness might be. I also ask them to share any
other information that they feel might be
important to know about how their child learns
best.
• Each start of the week, we have a morning

share about our weekend, events happening at I would like to grow in the are of data analyzing (tests,
school and what we want to get out of the school quizzes, benchmarks) for my students growth
week. This brings a sense of community to our
classroom and it helps students feel connected
through simliarities they might have.
• I have taken the time to read through each of my
students IEPs and 504 plans (if they have one) to
familiarize myself with their goals and any
accommodations that I should be providing them in
class. This also gives me a good sense of what each
students needs to be sucessful for the year.

students.
5. Teachers Appreciate How Knowledge in Their Subjects is Created, Organized, and Linked to Other

Disciplines
6. Teachers Command Specialized Knowledge of How to Convey a Subject to Students
7. Teachers Generate Multiple Paths to Knowledge

• In Social Studies, I have created different ways for
my students to display their knowledge of the
subject matter. They use tools like Flipgrid, Mind

• I have designed projects such as the California
Mission Project, that include both Language Arts
(research/writing), Social Studies and Art for my
students to engage in.

Proposition 3: Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. E/E A I/I
1. Teachers Call on Multiple Methods to Meet Their Instructional Goals
2. Teachers Support Student Learning in Varied Settings and Groups
3. Teachers Value Student Engagement
4. Teachers Regularly Assess Student Progress
5. Teachers Engage Students in the Learning Process
Three Examples of Proposition 3 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth
• In my classroom we use a lot of "movement" while
learning. Students are able to work around the
room or with a partner if possible. We take
frquent "brain breaks" to make sure that my
students aren't sitting for too long.
• I have a Partner system set up where students are
given partner cards and they can write 5 names
next to each number. When I call out a number,

• We are a Multiple Intellegence school, which means
we use all 8 multiple intellegences throughout our
school day. For exmaple, I use music to transition
from one subject to another or I will have my
students do their independent reading outside
instead of in the classroom.

Proposition 4: Teachers think systematically about their practices and learn from experience. E/E A I/I
1. Teachers Make Difficult Choices That Test Their Professional Judgment
2. Teachers Use Feedback and Research to Improve Their Practice and Positively Impact Student Learning
Three Examples of Proposition 4 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth
• I make sure that each and every one of my students
feels safe and heard in my classroom. I check in
with students who seem to be having an off or

• I work with my families in my class to ensure that I
am meeting their educational needs
• We have a new PBIS behavior program at our school
that our teachers work together to establish and
maintain on campus

Summary of Strengths and Areas of Possible Growth

I think that my teaching is strongest in the areas of Proposition 2 and 3. I am able to generate multiple path to knowledge
for my students and I am very good at giving my students multiple way and settings to learn in.

I think that there is possible growth for me in Proposition 4 and 5. I would like to work more collabortivley with my
community to create a beneficial relationship between school and community. I would also like to better understand how
to use assessment data and feedback to improve my teaching practice
