CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
There are different trends that are known nowadays which entertain every individual
especially the teenagers. In this case, Korean drama is the most popular foreign novel in the
Philippines that serves as the marketing strategy of the international market through telenovelas.
This may somehow affect the patriotism of the Filipinos. Knowing this fact, the Korean dramas
have been reaching more audiences. Moreover, Korean dramas inspired a lot of products such as
clothes, goods, electronic devices and cosmetics from Korea and even in the local market. We also
see ubiquitous Korean restaurants and Korean-themed food stalls everywhere. Teenagers then
begin to follow this trend. The huge percentage of the Philippine’s population is composed of
young people, having these the ripple effect of this trend grows fast and continuously. Watching
Korean dramas is one of entertainments the teens have. As this practice grows over time, Korean
dramas influenced the personhood of the teenagers.
Hallyu (Hangeul) or Korean Wave (English) refers to the popularity of Korean
Entertainment and culture across the globe (Korean Culture and Information Service, 2015). The
Korean pop culture fever in the country of China that affects their media. Those drama became
successful with millions of Chinese viewers. From that year, when Korean pop culture is known,
Seoul also introduced their pop music gaining popularity especially among Chinese teenagers.
Korean wave then introduced in Japan in which their drama was aired on 2003. The drama became
an instant mega hit to the Japanese viewers eventually make the Hallyu reach success. The success
in the both country, China and Japan, helped the Korean wave be introduced to the different parts
of Asia. Moreover, this success formed anti-Hallyu movements, including China and Japan where
Hallyu first started. They ban the Korean pop culture in their country preventing the continuously
success of Hallyu. Hallyu then did not stop with their goal to expand its influence to the Asian
countries and beyond.

After entering the new millennium at this moment, Korean entertainment approached fast
to our country most broadcasters in the Philippines aired Korean dramas which are ABS-CBN,
GMA 7, TV5 as well as other TV networks: Net 25; PTV GMA NEWS TV; JEEPNEY TV and
IBC. They acquire Korean dramas from the most popular broadcaster in Korea, Korean
Broadcasting System (KBS), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Seoul Broadcasting
System (SBS). In the year 2003, Korean drama began airing in our country with the first Korean
Drama, “Bright Girl” in GMA 7 that was dubbed in Tagalog. They aired it to beat the chinovela
“Meteor Garden”, but unfortunately, due to the high ratings and popularity of “Meteor Garden”,
“Bright Girl” didn’t make the wave and got low ratings. Since then, the rivalry between the
networks in releasing and airing Korean Dramas continues to be more palpable.
Afterwards, Korean Dramas became more dominant and many audience requested to have
a Filipino adaptation of such series. As time passed by and the Korean dramas became such
phenomenon, the circulations of these produced enormously. There are lots of mediums where you
can watch Korean dramas, from television, through DVDs that has an English subtitle, online
websites that offer the complete episode of Korean dramas, and torrent downloads.

Filipino teenagers are more engage in watching Korean dramas. It catches the teen’s
attention by its theme, plot, characters, and even the soundtrack. Many teenagers buy pirated
DVD’s of it, wait for the upcoming episodes online and ask friends for a copy of such series.
Korean dramas seem to hypnotize them. Lots of teenagers are being addicted to it, and with the
continuous practice, they began to absorb the culture of Korean culture (Delos Reyes, Winter P.,
et al).

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The popularity of Hallyu began in the late 1990s when Korean-
produced films, or simply Korean drama, were exported to and aired in China.
There are three consecutive waves of Hallyu, namely: Hallyu 1.0 (K-drama),
Hallyu 2.0 (K-pop music) and Hallyu 3.0 (K-culture). In the mid-2000s,
Hallyu was successfully led by Korean idol groups, which owes its success
largely to web 2.0 that is driven by social networking sites and the smart
phone. Because of this, the Korean wave has reached its neighboring countries
in Asia and even the entire world (Kim, 2015; Cabello, Melo Mar Y., et al).
Additionally, Kim (2015) enumerated three theoretical analysis which
can be used in explaining how Hallyu came to popularity: (1) competence
(hard power), (2) attractiveness (soft power), and (3) criticism. Supporting the
first theory, Hallyu fame is due to the rapid industrialization that occurred in
South Korea during the late 19th century, prompting Hallyu to achieve
popularity. This event symbolizes a sign of hard power or cultural technology
for Koreans to make better cultural products through its rapid
industrialization. Hence, Hallyu is considered as an industrial phenomenon
and not a cultural one. The second theoretical analysis is a contrast to the first
one because Hallyu is viewed as a bearer of ―intrinsic Korean values‖ and
showing a role of maintenance in the Korean civil society (Cabello, Melo Mar
Y., et al)

LOCAL LITERARTURE
FILIPINO ADAPTATION

Particularly in the Philippines, telenovelas are initially referred as soap

operas. Soap operas pertain to stories told over an extended period, with
different characters being featured at different times (Kontranowski, 2017;
Caisido, Jilane E., et al). In the Philippines, even before Hallyu entered the
Philippine entertainment sphere, foreign films have had already captured the
minds of the Filipinos. Alanzalon (2011) provided an in-depth analysis on the
transition of foreign soap operas that dominated the Philippine media.
However, when the new millennium entered, the Philippine media was ruled
by another wave of drama, this time it originated from South Korea. It is
important to note the receptiveness of Filipinos to foreign products,
specifically on films and drama, despite the availability of domestic films, as
well as its effects on our daily lives.
On a similar study, Reyes (n.d.) provided a detailed explanation on the
receptiveness of Filipinos to Korean drama; stating that Filipinos went crazy
over Hallyu not only because a new genre of film, Korean drama, were
introduced into their television sets but also because of the new culture that
they are being introduced to. After the massive success of Mexican and
Japanese films in the Philippines, Filipinos did not had enough and
craved for more – and the answer for their craving is the all-new Korean
drama. He further stated that one of the factors that made Filipinos love
Korean drama is its simplicity and theme with a touch of feel light or tear
jerker story. It also showcased Korea‘s cultural heritage, which made
Filipinos feel like they are being toured in Korea. Lastly, Filipino people
easily loved Korean drama simply because those drama have touched
Filipinos’ hearts effortlessly (Cabello, Melo Mar Y., et al).

TELENOVELA INDUSTRY MARKETING

One of the most important variables is the Actors, which is an indication
of a telenovela’s quality. In fact, there is a positive relationship between the
presence of a famous star in a telenovela and its sales. Meanwhile, strong
reputation and recognition from critics including nominations and awards may
pave way for Teleseryes to be patronized by the viewers. Film budget which
signifies that large production budget could also be taken as a signal of higher
quality and greater viewer rating’s popularity. Relevantly, Genre is also one of
the variables that are needed to look at. In line with this, the marketers must
constantly consider the audience’s genre preferences (Caisido, Jilane E. et al).
Promotion which is defined as the communication with individuals,
groups, and organizations in order to motivate them towards patronizing
telenovelas. Promotion includes the following channels: The first and the least
expensive form of promotion is Word of mouth which refers to the informal
communication between viewers concerning positive or negative viewing
experiences with regards to telenovelas. Greater awareness tends to generate
greater sales. The role of Word of mouth is to influence consumer’s attitude.
The second is Telenovela review, consisting of critics, newspapers’, television
stations’ and other media’s employee who screen newly released telenovelas in
order to provide subjective views regarding the telenovela for the public’s
information. This contributes in consumers’ decisions because their judgments
serve as product previews, making them one of the first links in the diffusion of
information about the telenovela. Additionally, their professional status
strengthens their credibility. Hence, positive reviews may increase sales
(Caisido, Jilane E. et al)
