CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
There are different trends that are known nowadays which entertain every individual
especially the teenagers. In this case, Korean drama is the most popular foreign novel in the
Philippines that serves as the marketing strategy of the international market through telenovelas.
This may somehow affect the patriotism of the Filipinos. Knowing this fact, the Korean dramas
have been reaching more audiences. Moreover, Korean dramas inspired a lot of products such as
clothes, goods, electronic devices and cosmetics from Korea and even in the local market. We also
see ubiquitous Korean restaurants and Korean-themed food stalls everywhere. Teenagers then
begin to follow this trend. The huge percentage of the Philippine’s population is composed of
young people, having these the ripple effect of this trend grows fast and continuously. Watching
Korean dramas is one of entertainments the teens have. As this practice grows over time, Korean
dramas influenced the personhood of the teenagers.
Hallyu (Hangeul) or Korean Wave (English) refers to the popularity of Korean
Entertainment and culture across the globe (Korean Culture and Information Service, 2015). The
Korean pop culture fever in the country of China that affects their media. Those drama became
successful with millions of Chinese viewers. From that year, when Korean pop culture is known,
Seoul also introduced their pop music gaining popularity especially among Chinese teenagers.
Korean wave then introduced in Japan in which their drama was aired on 2003. The drama became
an instant mega hit to the Japanese viewers eventually make the Hallyu reach success. The success
in the both country, China and Japan, helped the Korean wave be introduced to the different parts
of Asia. Moreover, this success formed anti-Hallyu movements, including China and Japan where
Hallyu first started. They ban the Korean pop culture in their country preventing the continuously
success of Hallyu. Hallyu then did not stop with their goal to expand its influence to the Asian
countries and beyond.
After entering the new millennium at this moment, Korean entertainment approached fast
to our country most broadcasters in the Philippines aired Korean dramas which are ABS-CBN,
GMA 7, TV5 as well as other TV networks: Net 25; PTV GMA NEWS TV; JEEPNEY TV and
IBC. They acquire Korean dramas from the most popular broadcaster in Korea, Korean
Broadcasting System (KBS), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Seoul Broadcasting
System (SBS). In the year 2003, Korean drama began airing in our country with the first Korean
Drama, “Bright Girl” in GMA 7 that was dubbed in Tagalog. They aired it to beat the chinovela
“Meteor Garden”, but unfortunately, due to the high ratings and popularity of “Meteor Garden”,
“Bright Girl” didn’t make the wave and got low ratings. Since then, the rivalry between the
networks in releasing and airing Korean Dramas continues to be more palpable.
Afterwards, Korean Dramas became more dominant and many audience requested to have
a Filipino adaptation of such series. As time passed by and the Korean dramas became such
phenomenon, the circulations of these produced enormously. There are lots of mediums where you
can watch Korean dramas, from television, through DVDs that has an English subtitle, online
websites that offer the complete episode of Korean dramas, and torrent downloads.
Filipino teenagers are more engage in watching Korean dramas. It catches the teen’s
attention by its theme, plot, characters, and even the soundtrack. Many teenagers buy pirated
DVD’s of it, wait for the upcoming episodes online and ask friends for a copy of such series.
Korean dramas seem to hypnotize them. Lots of teenagers are being addicted to it, and with the
continuous practice, they began to absorb the culture of Korean culture (Delos Reyes, Winter P.,
